Windows 10

If you cant remove domain. You have to wait for release then manually run the update, from within windows update. I assume that means w10 will show up as an optional update.

It doesn't look like the Windows Update appears on any domain machine unless the Admins push it out.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the point in the 'free' upgrade to Windows 10 - am I missing something here?

Extended support for Windows 7 ends in 2020 right? So I know I'm going to get critical patches until that time for Windows 7. If I use my Windows 7 licence to upgrade to Windows 10, am I not effectively converting that licence into a Windows 10 licence, i.e. my Windows 7 discs will become useless.

I read an article on Extreme Tech where it says you will be able to do clean installs with your upgrade licence onto the same device, and that, to me, is surely a step backwards, considering the amount of times hardware changes in our PCs?

It sounds like my retail Windows 7 licence will be turned into a Windows 10 OEM licence is what I'm trying to say.

Or am I just making up 'faffage'?!

Your making up faffage :p.

Your Retail Windows 7 gets upgraded to a Retail Windows 10. Not that it matters as since Windows 8 the restriction to a single device only applies to versions of Windows that came pre installed. If you buy a Windows license yourself (OEM or Retail) and install it yourself it can be transferred. The simplest way to look at it is if you have a key that isn't embedded din your BIOS, you can transfer it.

Faffage, definitely faffage. You're getting an OS upgrade for free, that's a nicer faster OS than Windows 7.

In that article I mentioned it said clean installs on the same device, which makes it sound like OEM talk. That's why I'm hesitant to make the switch.

How do I go about reserving a copy for my laptop which is already running a clean install of technical preview? Should the reservation icon still appear or will I have to reinstall 7 first?

You should automatically get upgraded to the release version via Windows Update. No need to reinstall anything.

most do yeah. but not all laptops/pc's have embedded keys, some have a product key sticker which can't be transfered

simplest way to look at it is if the os was Pre installed when you bought the laptop/pc then u can't transfer it.

Not so. If you have a clean install of Windows 10 Preview then it won't be updated to the final version as its not licensed.

If you have updated a 7 or 8 install to 10 Preview through Windows Update then it will, as it will upgrade your underlying 7 or 8 license.

So for No-One, you will have to reinstall your copy of 7 to get the upgrade.

Has anyone managed to do a proper clean install of Win10 ie, full disk wipe and start from nothing? My disks are MBR, and I'd like to move them to GPT, so an upgrade install isn't going to cut it. I can't even do a disk image copy of the existing system as that just copies back the MBR structure.

What do you need to do in order to get the Upgrade prompt on a Domain/Enterprise PC?

The free upgrade is for home users, not enterprise customers. Which version of Windows is the machine running?

Retail, OEM or volume licensing?

Nothing decent for live TV, no.

I've been trying DVBViewer but couldn't even get it to pause, fast-forward or rewind, which should be the very minimum a paid-for TV viewer should do. Other than that it seemed OK, but the EPG was a pain to set up.

With MCE, despite it's problems, everything was at least seamless.

It's enough to keep me on 8.1.

untill there is a decent alternative i will be having to stay with win7
a real shame :(

Had the same issue as you Kissenger. I done it by finding the installed file. Go to: Local disk C > Windows > System 32 > GWX (If installed that's where it will be) and just click on the windows icon that says GWX next to it, that should bring up the icon on your taskbar.

It's most likely that I'll have to do that to get the icon to show since everything else hasn't worked, but it does depend on if it does work since I was looking through the task manager yesterday and saw the GWX process start up and close shortly after.

Got the latest preview on a VM, and liking it so far.

Just curious to see how folks are using the task view/multi desktop features? I can't see me using it as I don't even like having more than one page on my smart phone, and I tend to put very little on my desktops usually.

So, share your ideas!

The multi desktop idea has been around for about 15 year in Linux GUIs. I never used them then, and I can't see me ever using them now :p.

I'm sure some people will find them really helpful, but personally I have no use for them.

Never really used linux/Unix etc. outside of things like Partedmagic and the like. Nor do I, just curious to see what others use them for...
