Windows 10

Sorry if this has been asked before but i don't fancy going through 102 pages :)

Will people who install preview/leaked versions be able to do a direct upgrade to the final edition or will it be a clean install job?

I'm still confused over the latest statement over a clean install on the free upgrade: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9334/...-can-clean-install-windows-10-after-upgrading

Does that mean even if I have a retail 7 key, the upgrade gets locked to the system (which I assume is mainly the motherboard)? And that statement makes it sound like we need to do an upgrade first before doing a clean install. How hard is it to make it clear .

If you installed over a Windows 7 or 8 install using the Windows Update method, yes.

If you did a clean install from an ISO, its not been confirmed and as theres no license in those versions we don't know how it would be possible, so assume no until we hear otherwise.

Retail Windows 7 will not be tied to a motherboard once upgraded. It remains transferable. From Windows 8 onwards the only licenses that are not transferable are those that come preinstalled on a device.

The wording reflects the current structure of licenaing and how most devices are now licensed. Windows 7 Retail is the odd one out, as it uses a now defunct license structure.

And yes, using the app you will need to update your current 7 to 10 and then you can clean install it from then on.

Windows 8.1 Enterprise License.
In which case you will never get the pop-up as Enterprise do not get the upgrade through this mechanism.

You either have to wait for the upgrade through the volume licensing channel (talk nicely to your admin) or perform a sidegrade from Enterprise to Pro (you will need a valid 8/8.1 licence and key). I did the sidegrade (see earlier in this thread) and it worked remarkably well.

Nothing decent for live TV, no.

I've been trying DVBViewer but couldn't even get it to pause, fast-forward or rewind, which should be the very minimum a paid-for TV viewer should do. Other than that it seemed OK, but the EPG was a pain to set up.

With MCE, despite it's problems, everything was at least seamless.

It's enough to keep me on 8.1.
My quad tuner HTPC will be remaining on 8.1 for the very same reason. It's a real shame they have dropped Media Center. Windows 10 has native support for MKV, FLAC and HEVC which could have brought new functionality to Media Center.

The clean install all seems a bit convoluted. My impression is that you have to upgrade to Win 10 first from a qualifying O/S. Once you have done that you could use the Win 10 recovery system to do a clean install.

I dont know if media will be available to allow a clean install from say a formatted blank HDD/SSD drive. I think media will be available to do the upgrade for those who have slow or heavily charged internet connections but that's not the same as using media to install from scratch. However Win 8.1 allows you to download a media iso to install from clean so maybe Win 10 will as well. Not sure how that all works though if there's no win key code with Win 10.

Just use media portal it's just as good if not better, although harder to set up. But not stupidly hard.

Crikey, there is a LOT of updating involved in getting a new Windows 7 install fully updated... :)

Ah ok. In that case I'll just wait. Thanks.

Microsoft have confirmed there will be media available to download like there is with 8.1.

Its not convoluted at all. They are selling Upgrades for free, so it seems perfectly reasonable that it requires you to have an install already and then upgrade it to get it.

The Windows 10 media will accept what are now Windows 8 keys, as most are embedded in peoples BIOS. Keys not longer identify specific versions if Windows, they identify a device/license.

Downloading the latest build now to run a VM. Want to see what changes have been made, see Spartan etc and generally get the feel of it again for the upcoming release.

Thanks, just took a look at the website and it does look pretty decent. I have been put off alternatives somewhat because most people seem to say that Media Center still gives the best user experience for live/recorded TV.

It does but I stopped using MC since the EPG became messing up over a year a go and series link didn't work how it used to.

It looks like I definitely won't be getting the windows 10 upgrade since I've tried quite literately every method to get the icon to appear in the system tray which includes putting an exemption for the whole GWX folder into my anti-virus and running the GWX application directly have ended in failure (running the GWX application directly does absolutely nothing since it doesn't even appear in the task manager), and even when I'm waiting for everything to settle after starting up over the past two days and have the task manager running the GWXconfigmanager program starts shortly followed by GWX and after a few seconds both programmes vanish.

The only thing I've gotten from this is an optional driver update in windows update, so if nothing improves I'm going to be gutting the two updates that comprise the windows 10 upgrade system from my computer and putting a block on them from being installed again.

Quick question for anyone who removed the updates that made the reserve icon pop up etc, does your windows update window still say that the windows 10 upgrade is still reserved? Just curious.

I'm running it in Virtual Box, but not having any ongoing CPU issues.
Edge/Spartan seems to have an occasional CPU spike though for no obvious reason.

On the subject of Edge and browsers, will IE11 still be in the final build?
I use a couple of add ons regularly and the latest I could find is that Edge will NOT support any add ons at launch.

Yes, IE11 will be in Windows 10 but its now end if life. So its there for compatibility but Edge is Microsoft's future direction.

which is a good move as Edge is fantastic. Whats even better is they are starting to add the normal bits and pieces to make it a full browser like ability to import favourites etc - definitely required on the run up to release. Glad they did it this way so they can test the most changed bits first.

demonix - there are a few ways to get the notification to appear forcefully. Make sure you have all the required updates first as a few people have said but you can either force it via task scheduler, run the application as admin from System32 or via cmd, and there are also a few scripts you can run to ensure it knows your computer is "w10" ready - this is the part that seems to be causing people some issues.

I will try find the guide I followed to get it. It was posted from msft.
