Windows 10

Laptop: I have an m18x with the key in the uefi? Will windows 10 just use that to activate on a clean install?

I believe a hardware hash for that device will be stored in your MS account to show a valid W10 upgrade, Gabe Aul suggested that their customer support can help if the hardware hash changes too much and throws activation out.

I have a windows 8.1 Key.

But when w10 is officially released I should be able to use my key to validate a fresh w10 install right?

We don't know. Microsoft haven't confirmed how, or if this will be poasible.

At the moment the only way to upgrade a 7 or 8 key into a 10 is to run the update inside a 7 or 8 install. Directly applying a non upgraded key to a clean 10 install has not been confirmed as a possibility.

They have confirmed that you can clean reinstall 10 using your key after upgrading. So the W10 installer will accept 7 and 8 format keys, but theres no word yet that activating these inside the 10 install also has the functionality to register them as upgraded.

I hope they do, but I can understand if they don't. Forcing you to install 7 or 8 first, at least initially, does ensure the upgrades are actually run as upgrades.

Personally I've clean installed my copy of 7 in preparation and will run the upgrade in that and then immediately reset it back to a clean 10 install using the tool inside the OS (effectively a clean 10 install).

Might be worth holding off an upgrade if you plan to change motherboard in the next year. The using you old seven install, then upgrade or fresh install ten, so it is tied to that device, rather than a new device, esp if intel are bringing a new chipset.

I am still running an i920 d and as it is oced, I haven't seen any reason to upgrade for years and years, eventually not doubt I will.

If your running retail 7 then your upgraded 10 won't be tied to one motherboard. Nothing in the terms of the 10 upgrades states any changes to the conditions of the underpinning license.

If your using OEM 7 then its already tied to your motherboard even before you upgrade. If your running retail or OEM 8 it doesn't matter as you are able to transfer any of these, except for if it was preinatalled on a prebuilt system.

Do you have KB2952664 installed? Its also required along with KB3035583, but never appeared on my machine. I had to go get it manually and then run through each if the options in this script in order: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0u0au9xgy6ss18p/win10fix_full.zip?dl=0

Make sure you run it from an elevated command prompt.

Both updates are there (I checked when I was doing other research), but the first fix listed in that batch file worked.

demonix - there are a few ways to get the notification to appear forcefully. Make sure you have all the required updates first as a few people have said but you can either force it via task scheduler, run the application as admin from System32 or via cmd, and there are also a few scripts you can run to ensure it knows your computer is "w10" ready - this is the part that seems to be causing people some issues.

I will try find the guide I followed to get it. It was posted from msft.

EDIT: found it http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/i-want-to-reserve-my-free-copy-of-windows-10-but-i/848b5cce-958b-49ae-a132-a999a883265b

I'd already tried all those to get it to appear (force running any of the components resulted in a little access from the hard drive and nothing else after that along with attempting to run the GWX program directly) with no success, but the patch file in the link you posted (and had already been posted by skeeter) fixed the problem that was stopping the icon from appearing (from the looks of what I read when that fix was running, it was a fault in the registry).

Good! Glad you got it sorted :)

Getting excited about this release now. I hope this puts windows back on a good track. Theyre saying the right things.

They need to forget making money out of the OS. The world has changed and I think they have finally 'flipped' in the business sensenof the term.

I could do with purchasing 3 copies, any chance MS will do a special offer or should I seek out some older Windows 7 or 8 retail copies?

Are you downloading and installing Windows Updates?

I checked and had only Optional Updates available. None of which were descriptively named re: W10 though.

I have just installed the update mentioned in the thread below so I am waiting to see what happens next. I have a feeling my question was asked and answered in this thread before - apologies for being a lazy bum ;)

yes your 8.0 key will become a 10 key.

it seems win 10 will have a default product key

u must fully compute the upgrade first then it sends MS information.

just reserving the upgrade doesn't send anything information to MS like keys/hardware ID

No, your Windows 7 key doesn't become a Windows 10 key when you reserve the upgrade for Windows 10. You must complete the upgrade to Windows 10 during the free upgrade offer period to get Windows 10 for free.

No, it will not.

Windows 10 has its own default product key. You just won't see it.

Installed the KB update suggested, nothing happened. Googled it and read that removing and reinstalling the update could force the popup to appear; that didn't happen either.

What next?
