Windows 10

are you on SP1? should be able to tell from the same screen.

if you look under windows update from control panel do you see a bit at the top about W10?

should look like this

How-to-Reserve-Your-Free-Windows-10-Upgrade-on-Windows-7-Without-the-Notification-Tool-483292-2.jpg

I don't have anything like that. It's just the usual 'Windows is up to date' window.

I have that installed. I've done everything correctly. The guy on the Microsoft technical help said it's because I have an OEM version of Windows 7.

you should still be able to upgrade to OEM W10, im sure others with OEM windows 7 does.

I have a Lenovo on windows 7 pro which got the option to upgrade and that came on the PC (not too sure if its OEM though)

site here states the upgrade is for windows 7 OEM

Do you have to register (now) for the offer to install over the coming year to be available?

Or can I ignore the whole matter for six months, and then sign up and upgrade (all for free)?

you can ignore it and just download the ISO file when its released which is what I am doing.

You can't do this. Microsoft have confirmed that in order to get your license upgraded you have to go through the Upgrade process from within a licensed version of the OS. Just installing Windows 10 from an ISO and entering your Windows 7 or 8.1 key wont work.

NeilFawcett, you are fine to ignore it for up to a year though. Just use the app in your system tray when you do decide to take it.

The guy on Microsoft Technical Help is wrong. OEM installs get the prompt just like everyone else.

Download this script, run it in an elevated command prompt, and work through each of the options:

That confirms that you won't simply be able to install 10 clean from an ISO using a 7 key. You will need to go through the upgrade process once its released to get a license. Then you can reinstall after.

Some other things confirmed on that page are that Retail will remain Retail, and that you can't downgrade back once you take 10.

If you install the preview over a 7 or 8 install using the Windows Update method, yes.

If you clean install the Preview from an ISO, no.

Ahh I used the clean ISO method.

When does it expire?

I've used the script method and it just runs in a loop of errors. There is something about script/file can't be found.

They haven't added a roll back feature.

Its in the Technical Preview, but that doesn't mean it will be in the final release. We won't know that until the end of July.

it's in one of the video MS posted on channel 9 they were talking about the roll back feature and the upgrade path etc.

but i guess we'll just wait and see

It would be nice if they did a free upgrade for the people who took the time to contribute to the insider program.

It would also save all those people on the insider preview from having to put windows 7 back on then claim their free upgrade and then move to Windows 10.

Make sure you run it from a command prompt set to run as Administrator.

And have a read through this:

If the script is failing in an infinite loop, then you don’t have the necessary prerequisite Windows Updates. Besides requiring Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update, you must also have installed:
For Windows 7 SP1:
KB3035583
KB2952664
For Windows 8.1 Update:
KB3035583
KB2976978”

Only if you have a Windows 7 or 8 license to upgrade from.

They are not giving away Windows 10 copies for free.

Worth a try!

I did a clean install of windows 10 a number of times already from usb/iso. This means i would have to put windows 7 back on and then upgrade to 10 to get a free upgrade. Would be better to avoid that, seeing as spent time beta testing their OS for free.

It is an 'Upgrade' remember. Requriring you to have a licensed installation to upgrade from is kind of the point ;).

Given a Windows 10 Upgrade/Installation takes about 10 minutes from a USB stick its hardly the end of the world :p. My only issue is theres a heck of a lot of updating required in order to get a clean Windows 7 installation fully updated!

u could get win7 with sp1 media then it should upgrade to win10 without having to download any other updates i'm guessing.

I clean installed 7 the other day. There was a pile of updates, plus an update to Windows Update before SP1 appeared. And then after SP1 there was over 200 other updates totalling over 1GB.

It was easier to just let it install everything and go and have dinner than it was to try and filter out the specific ones I needed :p.

Oh and even after all that I had to force the Update to appear using that script I've linked too a few times :p.

I've got to do it again to another PC that I'm taking from Server 2003 to Windows 10, via a re-installation of Windows 7 Retail :D.
