Windows 10 Upgrade FAQ
Is it really free?
Yes.
Will I be charged after a year, or will I have to pay a subscription or something?
No. Its free forever.
How long is the free offer for?
You can take the upgrade for free until the end of July 2016. Once you have upgraded Windows 10 is yours forever.
Is it just a trial/demo?
No. Its an upgrade to a full version of Windows 10.
What do I need to get the free upgrade?
Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1. If you are on 7 and not SP1 you need to update, and if you are on 8.0 you need to update to 8.1.
I can't see the upgrade option in my task tray?
Check you have Windows Update KB3035583 installed, and then run this script from an elevated command prompt and work through the options:

What if I don't like it, can I downgrade back to 7/8.1?
Theres conflicting information on this. Some sources have said yes, others have said no.
Should I upgrade?
This is entirely up to you. If your in any way doubtful I would recommend waiting until others have ironed out the teething issues for you. So long as you take the upgrade before July 2016 it will be free.
Can I do a clean install?
Once you have upgraded a 7 or 8.1 licence, yes. You cannot simply install 10 using an ISO/USB Media and enter a non upgraded 7/8.1 key.
So will there be installation media (ISOs) available?
Yes. Most likely a USB media creation tool like there is with 8.1 currently.
Can I dual boot my Windows 7/8.1 and my new free Windows 10?
No. Its an upgrade licence. Your 7/8.1 licence will be transformed into a 10 licence. You cannot run both at the same time.
I have a retail Windows 7 key, will it become an OEM Windows 10 key and be locked to one motherboard?
No. Licences will retain the terms of the original licence. A retail Windows 7 key will become a retail Windows 10 key, and remain transferable across hardware.
What about OEM Windows 8.1? Aren't they different?
Yes. If you buy an OEM Windows 8 installation and install and use it yourself then it can be transferred. This will be the same when you move to Windows 10. The only Windows 8.1 licences that cannot be transferred are those that came pre installed on a prebuilt system.
I'm running the Windows 10 Techincal Preview, can I upgrade straight to the final version on release?
If you installed 10 Preview over a licensed 7 or 8.1 installation using the Windows Update method, yes. If you clean installed 10 Preview using a ISO, no, as there is no existing licence in the installation. Those who have done the latter will need to reinstall their 7/8.1 installation and upgrade through that.
So what is the best way to get a clean Windows 10 installation once its released?
Install 7/8.1. Take the free upgrade and apply to that installation. Use the Reset PC option within Windows 10 to create a clean installation, or use the Media to format and install from scratch.
