Windows 10

Do they send you a download link by e-mail? If so, then do what you like. Otherwise you'll need to keep things as they are until you can make an ISO to do a fresh install.

no u don't receive a link.

also remember this is a free upgrade version offer.. not a standalone version.

you have to upgrade from win7 or 8.1.

Yeah this is key.

You will have to upgrade an existing Windows 7 or 8.1 installation to get your 10 license. Once you have done that you can do what you want (leave it, Reset PC, format and clean install).

What is going to be required if you've done a) a clean install of the Win 10 Preview or b) an upgrade to the preview?

Andi.

Check the FAQ

There will still be a way to create an ISO to carry out a clean install. I am sure you can find a method to do this if you Google already.

Your missing the point. You cant just enter your 7 or 8.1 key into a 10 install from an ISO. You have you go through the Upgrade process first.

Once you have done that you can then do a clean install.

is it possible to use a 32 bit windows 7 and upgrade to windows 10 64 bit at all?

I have a spare retail copy of windows 7 which isn't being used but its 32 bit, to use this on my main PC I would need a 64 bit OS as got 6GB of ram

or maybe if the windows 7 32 bit key works with windows 7 64 bit I may install that and then upgrade to W10

At the moment that may be the case, let's see which options exist at release.

Microsoft have already confirmed it. You cannot upgrade a Windows 7 or 8.1 license simply by entering the key into a Windows 10 installation. You MUST upgrade it from within the original 7 or 8.1 installation itself. The same as with 8 to 8.1

windows 7 key works with both 32bit and 64 bit versions

they already said u can't just enter your 7 or 8.1 key into a win10 media to do a clean installation

it's a upgrade version. why is people finding it difficult to understand

Oh FFS. You NEVER had to enter a key any way for previous upgrades. You just had to have the media. Why are YOU finding it so difficult to understand?

An upgrade has always been a full version for every version of the MS O/S I've owned since W95.

EDIT: The following link from Microsoft and using reg query from Yaqub K's answer worked.

Anyone have advice for why a Lenovo H30-00 using 8.1 with Bing x64 isn't getting notification icon?

I did do a fresh install instead of trying to reclaim the massively bloated Lenovo pre-install. So don't know if the Lenovo provided installation would have popped notification once updated.

Used CoreConnect Edition of Windows, updated BIOS to latest version released April, and have obtained latest drivers direct from manufacturers with exception to keyboard driver direct from Lenovo.

Only Windows updates still remaining are Silverlight and Skype 7.3 for desktop.

One thing that has changed is when I search to bring up update it doesn't list the app version of update only traditional desktop version. Can still access the app style version if go via right charm bar.

Have tried the below solution and nothing happened

Try my solution posted on Microsoft Answer below hope it will fix your issue.

1. Uninstalled KB3035583 and restarted PC then ran Windows Update but found no update

2. Download kb3035583 x86 or x64 cab file below

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/...7a412e41ee.cab

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/...00447ad302.cab

3. Copy cab file to C:\temp

4. Open command prompt with elevated

5. Copy and paste x86 or x64 DISM command below then press Enter

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\temp\windows8.1-kb3035583-x86_dc717b43d95c7fd7c12fee2f13e0b17a412e41ee.cab

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\temp\windows8.1-kb3035583-x64_569671257f46c76e5f5d2f53b1c35500447ad302.cab

6. After installed cab file then Windows 10 icon will pop up

You have to upgrade, once you have upgraded, you can then clean install using an ISO.
So if you have win7 32bit and want to change to w10 64bit, you upgrade to win10, you then download ISO and do a clean install if 64bit.

Same if you just want to clean install you just need to upgrade first.

As for this running w10, it'll upgrade to full release if the key is there.

If you clean installed w10 preview you wont need to reinstall w7/w8, however MS haven't said how the process will actually work.

I am using W7 HP ATM. My SSD is full, I have bought a new one but was hoping to do a straight W10 install when the release variant was ready.

That's a pain.

Free up ~4gb update, then do a clean install on new sad, that would be the easiest. 4gb isn't a huge amount and you should be able to get that delete all temporary files, thumbnails and anything else you can.

This is a total guess, but I'm guessing when you upgrade an existing install, it registers your key on the activation centre and puts a tick by w10, so then you can clean install after that.
And people who havenot upgraded in the first year, wont have a tick by w10.

I notice that having now reserved the Win10 update, Windows 7 has had its security priveleges updated too to be more inline with 8.1. Now I cannot browse to my admin shares (c$, M$ and v$) which I commonly used to from my phone over WiFi.

Must faff around with regedit by the looks of it or just blanket share those drives and give my user account permission only to access it.

The relationship between a key and the version has changed. The media is not relevant in this case.

What you need to do is turn your 7 or 8.1 key into a 10 key before it will activate a 10 install. To do this you need to run it through the Upgrade process within 7 or 8.1 itself.

If you go straight to a clean 10 install with your 7 or 8.1 key it will not activate.

Yeah pretty much. Paul Thurrott has said this will be stored in the Windows Store.

Basically MS will have somewhere where they flag your key as being valid for Windows 10. To set this flag, you need to run the upgrade from inside 7 or 8.1.

Then once thats done, activating a clean install of 10 will work.
