Windows 10

Yeah I guess we will see on 29th July.

Thurott says there will be a key held in the windows store to show you have an upgraded win 10 but not sure they will give you the key. I guess if the Win 10 install media didn't ask for it at the beginning of the install then it can just check it once the system is up and it can access the windows store. If you add a small file into a win 8.1 install media you can get it to skip the early key request so that you can install straight to win 8.1 from a win 8 key without needing to install win 8 first and then upgrade through the store. Maybe it will be like that.

I have used the skip key option in windows 8 on a VM before.

I have a windows 8 laptop that I was able to install 8.1 on to, use a place holder key in the install and then activate using my 8 key after

A placeholder Key also works. Personally I have just added a .cfg file to the ISO and burned it to a disk and then it installs without asking for the key until the end of the process and the win 8 key works then.

July 29th seems an awfully long time away! I was a little on the skeptical side but now I am beginning to get excited about seeing Win 10 in action.

it will be here before you know it lol

So long as Microsoft seriously thoroughly test updates I don't see an issue with that. Most updates are to patch and fix things so it makes sense to keep them up to date.

I have all Pro copies of Win 8.1 on my machines so I should end up with Win 10 Pro anyway.

Seems quite sensible really for those using Home who are likely to be less computer savvy and may not keep on top of updates so effectively. Agree on the testing though as they have put out some howlers previously and a bit crappy if they auto install and give you problems. Personally I always turn off auto install updates and do it myself.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but if i do the upgrade from windows 7 or 8.1 to 10. Will I be able to go back if i want to or would I have to buy a new 7/8.1 key?

Is there a simpler way to force the sodding notification icon to reserve Windows 10 to appear without having to run scripts? It's just too much faffage (my new favorite word!) to go through.

I never got the notification on my old install, and I've done a fresh install (it needed doing anyway) and I still don't get it. I have the update installed too.

It would have taken you longer to type that post than to run a simple batch file :D

I'm going to bet you don't have the second KB update installed, the one that starts with a 2. Its an older update and it never appeared on my clean Windows 7 install, I had to go manually find it.

Running that script would tell you exactly what your missing.

I only know of the one update, the one ending in 583. I'll have a look for one starting with a 2.

EDIT: Never mind, I was looking at the longer method. I ran the batch file, both updates were installed (KB3035583 & KB2952664). I had to do the first 3 options before I got the notification though, and it appeared only once I closed the batch file, but at least I now have it.

How dare you!

You don't just run it though do you? The one I've seen you put into notepad and then do something with it. Is there another way or is it simpler than I thought?

Someone posted a batch file a few pages back.

On another note, has anyone had any driver, hardware companion software problems at all?

Also does anybody know if a certain Mr website when Googled sells genuine windows keys as I've found 8.1 pro for quite cheap for a new machine?

some say you will be able to downgrade and some say you won't be able too..

but one thing for sure you can't upgrade to win10 and then install 7/8.1 to dual boot.

Hmmmmm…. I don't know what route to take. Upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1.

What operating system are you currently using?

I personally would take a clone of your current setup and then upgrade...if down the line you don't like 10 then just format your hard drive and use the clone you took to go back to your original OS.

I don't see what the problem is, at some we all will HAVE to be on Windows 10. They are not going to keep Windows 7/8.1 supported like did with XP for so long/

So people, stop fussing and take the free upgrade soon as it comes along:) (for the people who still fear new Windows OS's)
