Windows 10

Oh FFS. You NEVER had to enter a key any way for previous upgrades. You just had to have the media. Why are YOU finding it so difficult to understand?

An upgrade has always been a full version for every version of the MS O/S I've owned since W95.

ok once win10 is released go head and do a clean installation straight away..

but don't come back saying oh why can't i get it to activate.

Could someone with Windows 10 on a test rig do me a big favour. I am nearly blind and use a screen reader. Could 1 of you kind lot test it on 10 and report back if it works in Edge and 10 in general.
Its free

It installs OK, but does not seem to want to speak to me.

I installed it on Windows 7, just in case I was doing something wrong, and it worked fine. Hold off for the time being.

Cheers mate:) I won't try the preview then. Hopefully will be working for the official release or shortly after. Don't suppose Microsoft will improve narrator for Windows 10.

I'm in a similar situation to you though haven't tried the screen reader you referred to. From experience though all accessibility software takes at least 12 months after a new windows release to have a decent level of compatibility, that has certainly been the case of dolphins screen readers since i started using them back in dos 6.22 and wordperfect 5.1 days.

I also agree that microsoft should put some effort into its narrator too, although there certainly not alone. Apple and google could also work harder on the screen readers on their platforms as well.

Well Im giving windows 8 another bash, but this time I have the win7 startmenu and the aero glass tweaks,, See if I can last more then a week before going back to win7.

I hated it at first, but I slowly got used to it, and I like it in the most part now. It's no W7, but it has some nice touches in there, that make me not want to go back. Also has some annoying stuff that makes me want to...... lol.

Hey there windows is offering me a free upgrade which will download on 29th July.

Should I do it?

I have done the same with W 8.1 and W 10. I only use them because I can install classic shell and get the Windows 7 start menu back and disable charms etc

Yeah pretty much. Paul Thurrott has said this will be stored in the Windows Store.

Basically MS will have somewhere where they flag your key as being valid for Windows 10. To set this flag, you need to run the upgrade from inside 7 or 8.1.

Then once thats done, activating a clean install of 10 will work.

So does this mean you will have to be logged into your microsoft account to install win 10? I personally don't want to be logged in all the time and use a local account when on win 8.1. i wonder then if Win 10 will require you be logged in all the time rather than allowing local accounts? Would seem odd as you don't have to be logged into Office 365 to use it just to install it but once installed you can go back to a local account. Actually it might work like that I suppose.

Otherwise how will they know you have a legit copy of win 10 if you are installing a clean install on a new SSD in a system with a new motherboard and cpu? If there is no key to input and no bios stored activation and its a new system compared to the one you previously registered when you upgraded from win 8/7 then how does Microsoft tell? or would you need to install win 8/7 then upgrade again then clean install win 10?

The flag will be against the license key of your installation, which is the same regardless of who is logged into your machine.

I imagine it uses the Windows Store functionality, rather than your specific Microsoft Account. I.e. its just a database to store the information that Windows will reference when activating your install.

How does Windows 8 to 8.1 work? That's through the Store isn't it?

Yeah the upgrade from win 8 to win 8.1 was through the store but then to install win 8 you had already used a key so I assume it cross referenced against a valid install key.

As I understand it you won't get a new key for the win 10 install so I wondered how Microsoft will be able to actually tell a machine is on their database of approved upgraded machines if the markers like the bios/mobo or SSD/HDD is new and blank. For laptops etc with BIOS keys thats easy enough I guess. I suppose it could reference against the key you used to install win 8/7 and then have that marked as a valid win 10 upgraded key. So if you use that key in the future it would tell them you had already upgraded that key to win 10 and then let you install win 10.

When you run the Windows 10 upgrade utility it will generate a Win 10 key. You can then either carry out the upgrade or download an ISO from MS and use the generated key to do a clean install.

This is what I was told from an MS chap....

I thought there weren't going to be any Win 10 keys? I never understood why not as it seemed the obvious way to do it to me to just generate a new win 10 key when you upgrade and then use that going forward but I was under the impression they had ruled that option out.

Yeah I guess we will see on 29th July.

Thurott says there will be a key held in the windows store to show you have an upgraded win 10 but not sure they will give you the key. I guess if the Win 10 install media didn't ask for it at the beginning of the install then it can just check it once the system is up and it can access the windows store. If you add a small file into a win 8.1 install media you can get it to skip the early key request so that you can install straight to win 8.1 from a win 8 key without needing to install win 8 first and then upgrade through the store. Maybe it will be like that.
