Ive never bothered looking into this Win 10 yet, not got the notification about the free upgrade either, as i hid the updates for it that came through :p

I really need to get my ass into gear i suppose :D

We're so close to release, there really isn't any point looking at the pre-release versions now, surely?

all the win 10 popup does is reserve your copy for release.

on release apparently you can just download the upgrade iso and do it that way anyway

No, you can't.

You have to upgrade through the OS first. Once you have done that you can then wipe and reinstall clean from an ISO, but going directly to a W10 ISO install won't work.

as i keep saying only the windows 10 insiders are getting it on the 29th, everybody else as to wait about 2days or a week

please note the words "upgrade iso"

anyway I read that on a microsoft site it was a community manager replying suggesting there will be an iso

The post I read suggested windows 10 icon in the task bar will be rollouts over a period of time in waves but he also suggested there would be an iso you can download to do it manually

I can't be bothered to try and find the post but it was on the answers.microsoft website and it was definitely someone with the MVP tag that said it and they were talking about release in a post related to not having the win 10 icon in the task bar.

I don't get it, what if you have stuff that won't work on 10, or you can't get 10 on or something, can you go back to your Win 7, or not, as 10s had to take the key to get it ?

you'd have to be dual booting win7 and already have the boot menu to select the os before upgrading I'd imagine.
I doubt you can undo a whole os upgrade with system restore or something

anyway seeing as they want everyone on win10 including pirates I'd assume they are making everything compatible still (yes pirates are getting the win10 reserve pop up as long as the os thinks it's genuine, saw it on another forum)

I just can't see it going smoothly, i really need to look into it, see how it all works, i just know its coming, and you get it free by having a copy of Win 7/8/8.1 etc... :p

Really?

I am waiting on a new Hybrid drive to arrive in a few days, would have been perfect timing to install 10 from scratch.

Its an upgrade. It requires a valid 7 or 8.1 install to upgrade from. They aren't giving away free full retail copies.

Get your new drive, install 7 or 8.1 on it, grab the upgrade on the 29th and then Reset PC and you will have your clean 10 install.

So I upgraded from win 7 to win 8... then 8.1 (Free), and now this win10 is coming out as an upgrade.

So... will I be able to use the original win7, as well as win10, and upgrade that win7 to win10 as well? (so two copies of win10).

I installed build 10130 originally over the top of a nearly 3yr old install of Windows 8.1 Pro, that was upgraded over the top of 8 in around 20mins, my 1TB SSD is around 50% full with dozens of apps and programs installed. Everything went extremely smoothly, the only thing that broke was my onboard sound and a quick check for updates via the device manager fixed that instantly. I needed to reinstall my GPU drivers but that was it.

I then upgraded to build 10162 via the Windows update, about 15mins to upgrade this time, again very smooth. Straight into Windows 10 and everything is running flawlessly. Very impressed how fast and smoothly this upgrade went. Can't wait to update to the final build, hopefully that update will go ok.

Played an hour of GTA 5 and no issues whatsoever.

No, because it's an UPGRADE!

Why has putting a price of £0 on it made everyone suddenly forget what upgrade means?

There were some MS comments that quite carefully said that non-genuine Windows would not be entitled to the upgrade. They didn't mention that some of the cleverest hacks aren't just messing about with Windows files to make Windows look genuine. They are actually using the OEM loophole to make Windows activation consider them as genuine OEM machines entitled to the upgrade.

If MS systems are saying your machine is genuine Windows, you'll get the upgrade offer, although I wonder what happens when you have Win 10 installed with presumably some new activation/anti-pirate technology that comes with it. You may suddenly find yourself with an installed OS that comes up as non-genuine, but an offer to upgrade to a real key for £99.

Having said that, there have been comments in the past about MS considering piracy as "try before you buy" and how they'd rather give it away to people (such as students with no money) than let them go to other OSes. MS want to get people into the MS ecosystem, and that's more important then ever given their new focus on the online service/app store type of business model.
