Windows 10

I might ditch Windows 10 to go for Linux Mint 17.2 instead. I just had enough of Microsoft more controlled things, some features u can't have it, some features can have it with enterprise. The adverts just put me off under free windows 10. I just hate the apps in stores. I wish they just removed it off!

Great, so could you stop talking out of your arse in this thread then? That'd be great if you could do that.

I'd not bother trying to argue any more with bulldog, he seems blinkered.

Yeah, it's looking like that.

where are these said adverts? Please provide screen shots?

The only adverts I have seen are on Skype - but you can disable them anyway with a easy fix.

If anybody needs the host file block....

Get the below code and paste into a batch file and run as admin.

Code:
@echo off
echo 127.0.0.1	apps.skype.com >> %Windir%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
echo 127.0.0.1	rad.msn.com >> %Windir%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
echo 127.0.0.1	live.rads.msn.com >> %Windir%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
echo 127.0.0.1	ads1.msn.com >> %Windir%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
echo 127.0.0.1	static.2mdn.net >> %Windir%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
echo 127.0.0.1	g.msn.com >> %Windir%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
echo 127.0.0.1	a.ads2.msads.net >> %Windir%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
echo 127.0.0.1	b.ads2.msads.net >> %Windir%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
echo 127.0.0.1	ac3.msn.com >> %Windir%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
pause

Then to get rid of the place holder ad box above the chat panel....
go to....

C:\users\youruser\AppData\Roaming\Skype\yourskypename\config.xml

open it with notepad, and search for "<AdvertPlaceholder>1</AdvertPlaceholder>"

Change the 1 to a 0

Jobs a good 'en.

Have to say build 10166 is much better than what I was running a week ago. Couple of things I want to mention just for the sake of it.

I tried to do an in-place upgrade from previous version of Windows 10 to 10166 and had awful problems with pin access, had to do a clean install unfortunately but even that threw up a few errors it seemed very buggy. I was caught in a proper boot loop where it would boot into Windows desktop give me an error about the start menu then restart (was booting to desktop without a user logging in). On the forth reboot it fixed itself and went through the normal user setup process.

Sound, I had to uninstall Realtek software to get the headphone jack to work.

Edge, I really like edge even though it doesn't have an adblocker yet, it seems to be pretty sweet. I especially like the dark mode. Also has a spell checker built in.

Microsoft make next to no money on consumer operating systems. To the point it's just easier to give it us Free rather than fight the piracy, which never works.

They will get the, little, money back from the app store. Especially with a single unified app system.

Hmmm, if MS thinks it is easier to give us free W10 rather than fight the piracy, then why the need for license keys? Linux OS is free, yet does not need a licence key. Why can't MS do the same approach?

You may be correct, but there are probably 80% of people out there who are not 'geeky' enough to know how to disable them, though? It would be nice to have MS offer some options, like tick boxes / ON-OFF / Yes/No, etc to some features, thus no need for technical how-to fixes...

Your thoughts?

Best

T.
