retail is fine, can be moved from any PC you want and do any hardware upgrades, the hardware change only effects OEM versions of windows.

I have got my hands on a Win8.1 key
However, do I have to install Win8.1 and then upgrade to Win10 or can I straight install Win10 with this Win8.1 key?

Mine says wins 10 update failed in recent updates? tbh I don't care to upgrade until September. So if it doesn't work I'm cool with that.

you need to upgrade from 8.1 to 10 before you can do a clean install

afraid so!, until you have done this your key (8.1)\hardware will not be tagged for W10 so if you went directly to W10 it will not activate

You can read the version from the files it's -

Same as latest insider build I believe.... You could try inserting the .Wim file from the insider and seeing what happens. I will wait for it to update itself...

Nope won't work... you need the physical file.... maybe the ESD 10240 will be install.wim and it's hidden somewhere else

It's normal apparently the update server is doing dummy updates to check you are ready apparently or something to do with the insider builds. ?
