Windows 10

Anyone else getting odd behaviour in Explorer?

Often when I browse folders etc, none of the icons (or files) will appear until I mouse over them.

Running 9879, updated.

Also my Num/Caps/Scroll lock LEDs aren't lighting up.

Not really that fussed at the moment about the issues above, but if this was my work machine, wouldn't be able to function.

Explorer kill/start fixes the icons in the meantime.

Same kind of thing I was experiencing here:

Anyone else getting graphics corruption on the desktop with the new build? Its been solid on the last two, but this latest one I keep get elements disappearing, or appearing as solid black.

Gaming and videos don't seem to be effected, it's purely on the desktop/browser/windows/start menu etc.

Tried different drivers, fresh install of the latest build, running everything at stock. Didn't fix it. Installed the latest update, same issues. I can only assume it's something wrong with the build, as the previous two builds I've had no problem with.

Reinstalled Windows 8.1 and everything back working flawlessly. *shrug*

I have an Nvidia card, I assume you're using the AMD one in your sig. So that should rule out a a graphics driver problem.

I'm only really using my pc for games/browsing at the moment, so it's not a dealbreaker for me right now.

I'm having the same corruption issue. It seems to manifest when you have a folder open with a lot of images in it, as I can repeat the issue fairly consistently.

This has been the last straw for me though, with the low SSD speeds*, and this. I will re-install 8.1 later and try 10 in a few builds' time.

*I've ran my SSDs on another PC that uses the same chipset/drive controller and I'm getting the rated speeds too.

Just got my old laptop back, for P&G I'm going to stick Win10 on it.
Core2Duo, 4Gb RAM, 256Gb 840 Pro...

Finally got around to having a quick look at Win 10. Just seems like a compromising mess to me. Sticking the tiles into a traditional Windows start menu is an almost laughably clumsy retraction. For god's sake, I had embraced the new Windows 8 style, and now they're backpedaling to keep the Win 7 moaners happy? Make up your mind, MS :(

My opinion still hasn't really changed. They should keep Windows 7 alive (and continue developing it) for enterprise use, and then have Win 8 for mobile devices. Why are they still trying to shoehorn the two together? Either spin the two concepts off separately or have the courage of your convictions and stick to the Win 8 concept.

15/4/15 iirc.
but by then, the RC build will be out, so it's effectively an extension.

hm yeh I think that's what happened with windows 8
if I remember right windows 8 was a re-install tho
or was that more to do with the 8.1 part I forget now ><

MS is have a windows 10 event on 21st of Jan.
As they said more public focused parts will be released in Jan. Then I'm thinking consumer preview.

And if you want news, they have also said the insider hub in the newest build will be the only place for all news, as some news won't be released on their blog.

Ok, I'm on a bit of a browsing day today.

I'm thinking maybe switching to Windows 10 as my permanent OS, but I'm not so much of a fan of constantly re-installing Windows.

If I switch over to Windows 10 running native and my main OS could I be faced with multiple re-installs at the moment?

Should I just stick with Windows 8.1?

From the sounds of it, yes you should just stick with Windows 8.1. These consumer previews are not really meant to be for the masses or for people who want a machine that just works, they're really for testing only. If you install this version, expect to have to do at least one reinstall at some point.

Rumours that 9901 wont flight out to newer builds, perhaps just a put out by MS to stop people using it, probs a regkey to change to get it to work, not that people that use this as it is intended will care, new VM/rebuild and you're sorted..

So I've spent the evening playing in VMWare Player with the latest preview build and TBH I'm not seeing what all the media fuss is about. I use 8.1 at work on a few machines and while I appreciate some of the under the hood tweaks so stuff like task manager and the like I do find it annoying how other areas have become worse.

The returned start menu is welcome but you can't use it the same way as you could in 7 unless I have not spotted a switch somewhere. When clicking all programs the whole start menu shifts into all programs whereas on 7 the right pane stays which is what I like as I have regular items there that I want to access without having to click back so the pane returns.

I also don't like how the file menu no longer shows when tapping ALT in Explorer but instead now you get hotkeys appearing for the toolbar like in an Office application.

There are other bits too but I can't see myself upgrading to 10 at all from 7 on my main gaming/editing machine.

Speed wise and smoothness wise it's nice but again, so is my Windows 7. The animations are revised and I do like them but they alone won't sway me.

I will stand my ground dammit!
