Windows 10

The upgrade will only be free in the first 12 months after release and will last for the "supported lifetime of the device." Microsoft said the new OS will run on PCs, tablets, phones, and a new device to be announced later today.

just think of it as a offer which is free. the offer lasts for one year. if you don't take the offer in time then you'll have to pay....

abit like win8 offer when it was £25 to upgrade for i think for the first 3 months.

Oh you mean getting every one access to their online Store.

They have spoken about going the google model. All your services and data in the cloud, social media, email, search etc. Building that into Win 10, giving it away for free and getting rid of the old legacy systems out there kills many birds with one stone.

If they charged for Win 10 and adoption was low (or even just good), they can't leverage all those value add services and features.

It must be free and free forever. No way will it fly if there's a subscription for it.

Don't have a new console so none of that stuff interests me personally. I don't really get the appeal of stream from Xbox to pc. I'm very much the reverse. I love steam stream from pc to htpc. Maybe it appeals more if you have kids

Haven't looked and all the Holo stuff. Sounds potentially awesome

Wish cortana could appear as she looks in halo :-P

At least they got rid of this guy. I always felt he came across as “This is what you will like and how you will use our OS. It’s not what you really asked us for but I’m telling you what you’re getting and I’m excited by it”

No offence to the guy but I just thought he was an over paid Numpty

Anyone know if Can you just talk to cortana from say across the room or do you need to press the keyboard? Always wanted to talk to my PC. I blame Buck Rodgers personally growing up in the 70’s and 80’s. :)

Its been talked about for a while..but she will be activated when you say "Hey Cortana", no button required, its what Joe was saying at the start of each instruction.

The same Voice activation is meant to be coming to WP as well.

I like it so far:
  • It's free!!!
  • The Xbox stuff will appeal to me personally (and let the Wife have the TV sometimes)
  • The Wife will take anything on her laptop if it gets rid of windows 8.1
  • We can sell this to businesses (They hated Windows 8 of course, shame they didn't include XP\Vista in the free upgrade, we needed a reason to push the last few penny pinchers off those, now they'll never move on)
  • I already want to know if the Surface Hub could replace an IWB in schools, that would be one heck of a bit of kit if the software was right
  • Holo thing, cool but can't see it taking off (people just don't like sticking things on them that make them look stupid and they looked a bit 80's to me)

The holo thing, I think will find an application in specialist environments. It's got to start somewhere. Even if it looks naff now.
