Windows 10

How will the 'freeness' work for me - I basically did a vanilla install of windows 10 from the insider program, before this I used XP!

So I don't have 7,8, or 8.1, but I do have a working version of 10. Will I have to pay for it at some point ?

i am running windows 7 but have no key for it as just using the 30 days you get with it, i tried 10 but games wouldn't load when they did on 7 fine so went back.

i am in the same situation where i don't have a valid 7, 8 or 8.1 key. someone said to get a cheap copy\key of 7 or 8.1 and then upgrade once 10 is released

You'd have to buy it, you don't have a working version of Windows 10, you've got a free to use preview.

I'm 100% sure that my Surface 2/3/Ultrabook will be fine with W10 for free.
I was using a Windows 8.1 MSDN and installed Windows 10 (Having wiped my PC)

Wonder if I'll have to buy 10 for my PC.

Anyone know if the free in the first year is only for retail copies or also for OEM versions?

Since windows 8 they are one and the same thing, they "simplified" the licenses. Scrapped retail and OEM, you can uninstall and reinstall on a different computer, so it's basically the same as the old retail.
And it'll be an upgrade license anyway.

Yeah I did think that would be the answer, however it's working well for me so far and with the announcements yesterday I wouldn't actually mind paying for this version of windows!

That's one of the main reasons I never upgraded from XP

I’m in the same boat with my old 2004 Win XP PC I’m using right now. Games just looked crap so I never felt the need to upgrade my machine and the only thing I bought was a new Asus flat screen as my 15 year old Viewsconic started playing up.

I’m happy to pay £70 or so for a brand new windows after keeping to Xp for all these years. Glad I missed the whole Win 8 disaster. It’s a big jump for me and I expect it to be a new experience with a familiar feel.

Some new games came out namely Elite, Dayz and got interested in games again so it’s a new Rig from OC when Win 10 drops. Happy to wait as lets face what ever the top GFX card is just now it will be half the price end of the year.

Liked what I seen about DX12. Its about time games ran right on the PC.

Win8 was not a disaster(especially with the 15 and 25 quid deals at the time)good OS and very stable, you can argue about sales and layout/ FUD but does not take away the fact 8 and especially 8.1 as it stands is an excellent OS,infact Win10 builds on Win8.1 so that should tell you something,as to XP I think I left that behind back in 2007(eight years ago).

I would not touch XP with a barge pole due to security holes and its end of life been and gone.

As to games well I only use Windows(8.1 at moment) for PC gaming (with no issues),gaming has always been improved ,especially after XP,ie DX10,DX11 etc....Win10 is just another progress on that front.

Anyone know what will happen with Windows 8 Tablets, will they be updated to 10 through Microsoft or Vendors eg. Toshiba for my Encore 8?

Would also like to see pre-orders for £25 and discount for households with more than one PC like a family pack or something, I have 5 PC's at my gaff and new OS's are very expensive apart from OSX!

I have heard that Windows 10 is a free upgrade. Currently I have Windows 8.1 installed (I own retail Windows 8). When I format my OS it is bad enough having to install Windows 8 then install the Windows 8.1 update. So now Will I have to install Windows 10 over that? May have to just buy the standalone disc if it ends up being a drawn out process just to format to Windows 10.

It’s just a browsing the web machine so happy it just works after ten years. I use it every day and even though it was a decent custom build it came with XP on it. Don’t get me wrong XP can be a piece of crap at times and over the years its had its wee glitches but its always came back with a fresh install. Got a separate USB3 1TB drive so backed everything up like Holiday pictures and my music.

When I say disaster that may have been unkind but it certainly has not been a success when they are moving on so quick. I read a lot of reviews at the time and when people are flocking back to win 7 it was never a good sign. The good thing is I did not touch win 8 I understand the nuts and bolt behind it probably were great but the interface let it down. So I will be going into Win10 with only XP to base my experience on.
I expect it to be an eye opener and happy Windows looks like its listening to customers rather than telling them how it should be.

Considering I’m on a AMD Athlon 64 single core and going Intel multi-cores its going to be a whole new ball game.

You've not been keeping up,Microsoft already stated a few years back they are going back to three years cycle for OS upgrade,Win8 will be three years old this year so bang on course,XP was far from the norm with six years gap before we saw another new OS.

XP to Win10 is a much bigger jump then 8.1 to 10 so your learning curve will be a little longer, however no Windows OS is rocket science.

Browsing wise that can be all done with a Linux distro like Mint or Ubuntu,I only use Windows for PC gaming, quite handy having both Linux and Windows PCs :) .

Side note: too bad you was not on at least Win7,you would have got Win10 free :) .

Or you now it's free and yes tablets will be updated like any other computer.

I expect win 10 to come out August or October and look forward to finding what I’ve been missing out on. Given these Early access builds I think is great for you guys to report back what work and not. I don’t think I missed anything in Vista but by the time win 7 came out my Machine was well past it.

I’ll have to adopt and thankful it looks a good yin as we say.

Update via the Store I expect, that's how Microsoft upgraded the Surface Pro from 8 -> 8.1.
