Windows 10

I have to agree, those icons are just so horrible, playschool even, i really don't know what on earth they were thinking and it really distracts from the experience because they're so prevalent

Well you guys know how I feel about the look of windows 10 so I wont repeat myself. Just hope they do some major improvements to it before or on release date, but I think its going to be another windows 8/8.1.

i did have a quick look for it the other day but i couldn't find it so gave up lol

Its in the Start>Settings>Update & Recovery, or what's left of it anyway as you cannot change much in the windows update part. But Im sure it will all be back in the control panel when its released.

I would be very surprised if it wasn't a full GUI with apps and programming tools.
After all it seems the plan is to get people programming in the Microsoft eco system.

Time will tell.

I dont think this will be a consumer level OS. It looks like its the internet of things which I dont think has a proper windows UI. I might be wrong though.

Note: Windows 10 on Pi 2 will be an IoT platform, not a desktop OS.
You'll develop your app in Visual Studio on a Windows PC and deploy it to the Pi.
Raspbian will continue to be the main supported OS.

I'm not sure if MS have ever come to the level of Apple and their OS icon set. I have rarely enjoyed but merely endured Windows icons although I don't seem to have the will to change them with icon packs etc as I did years ago.

Those "10" icons look like playschool Crayola drawn type, so garish.

hi,, just checking im not being a total idiot but.....

they have removed the ability to only manually run windows update???

Disable New Windows Update UI and Enable Previous UI

Microsoft has also updated Windows Update UI in the latest Windows 10 build 9926 and some people are facing problems with this new UI.

Interested people can disable this new Windows Update UI and bring back the old UI using following method:

1. In Registry Editor, go to following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX

2. In right-side pane, change value of IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled DWORD to 0

That's it. It'll immediately disable the new Windows Update UI.

If you want to restore new Windows Update UI, change value of IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled DWORD to 1 again.

thank you.

im still a bit stunned that ms has gone so out of its way to disable manually updating though. seems mad.

Presumably it's because they want everyone to have all the updates installed on the auto update cycle while the OS is still in the preview build phase. Not entirely unreasonable I'd have thought.

so have it default to auto update. you could still allow manual to operate in addition.

mostly though, if windows update starts updating drivers, because we all know how awesome windows update is for drivers, and then breaks something i will be hugely annoyed

issue is that if windows 10 wants to update at 3am my PC will never be on at that time lol

that used to be the default time if i remember correctly in windows 7

Again - it's a preview build, stuff is going to break. If that's not something you're prepared to put up with, go back to a full release version of Windows. Alternatively, stick with the 10 Preview Builds and give feedback to Microsoft when stuff doesn't work.

Just don't go all Princess Stampyfoot™ and moan on a forum when something on a not-even-released-yet operating system goes a bit funny :p

Mine seems to default to 10pm rather than 3am, I think you can still change the time that it restarts to install updates though.

It's Alpha software in active development. If you're not happy with Microsoft "breaking" something then go back to an RTM operating system.

Don't take this the wrong way but I get annoyed when I read posts like this, first it's preview alpha/beta build so YOU use it at your OWN RISK,by design it's for feedback and testing purposes only, so you are basically unpaid tester for their software.

Don't expect a perfect OS from a preview OS build because you won't get one,end of the day was your choice to install and use a preview build so your issue not Microsoft's.

There are many reasons why quite a few people wait for final/RTM builds and then some.
