Windows 10

Yes, but you are still talking rubbish. and no that certainly isn't the only way. Seing as serial keys are unique, or they could issue new serial keys.

Seeing as they have already covered this, not sure why you are carrying on.

just because you don't agree with what i'm saying doesn't mean, i'm talking rubbish, people see things in different ways.

lets leave it as this

It will more than likely be a key-verified system like the jump from Windows 7 to Windows 8 for £15 was.

Microsoft are stupid, and make dumb decisions all the time, but they aren't going to do anything as thick as forcing people to roll back to Windows 8.1/8/7/XP if they need to reinstall after a year, they have enough trouble as it is getting people to adopt their new software.

I you wouldn't mind, thanks. My lack of OpenGL v2 stability means I've been forced into using the DirectX v2 rasteriser and the performance on modern cards is rubbish in my experience (seems GPL isn't triggering the GTX 970 to fire up fully).

Right, looked at my GPL install. I'm using GEM+ 2.5.0.32 to launch it, settings for the OGLv2 rasterizer as follows:

Maximum Mip Size, LOD Bias and Toss Biggest Mips set to 0. 32 Bit Graphics ticked. Anisotropic filtering = 16 (4 levels). VSync disabled. Direct Mirror Rendering and Trilinear Filtering ticked. Mirror size = 0. Run ZBuffer in separate thread. ZBuffer with Grouping. And using 1920x1080 as a custom resolution. All the graphics options switched on, detail level at 99 to stop the usual graphical corruption that 100 causes.

That setup has pretty much been the same for me since Nigel released the V2 rasterizers, the only thing I've changed since then is the screen resolution when I upgraded my monitor (was 1600x900 before).

I shall be making the jump when it becomes properly available, currently run 8.1 with no issues although I don't use the metro screen on my PC, it's perfect for my tablet though.

Well Ive tried my hardest to like win 8.1/10 and failed, so seeing that the support will last untill 2020 for win7 I think I will be sticking to it till the foreseeable. Win7 just runs everything so much nicer then win8+ withot niggly problems that get on your goat.

Cheers JRS, I'll give that a go tomorrow night. Are you using an AMD or Nvidia graphics card? I did notice the 4GB exe patch helped matters, but the FPS was still hovering around 20-30 at in a full pitlane.

Sweeping statement is sweeping.

There are a great many of us that enjoy 8.1 and have absolutely zero issues what so ever. I would be shocked if many of the 'niggly problems' you are encountering aren't down to another factor other than the OS.

Windows 7 seems pretty clunky to me nowadays when I use my partner's laptop or my Dad's pc's.

Looking forward to 10 but I'm in no hurry ot ditch 8.1.

Cheers JRS, like I say I'll give it a go tomorrow night.

Same. It's not a pain to use as such, but it certainly isn't as zippy as 8 is.

8's hybrid hibernation mode is a good feature too, though I wish they'd find a way to finish update installations as part of the hybrid shutdown, as currently you have to restart the PC manually to complete installations, whereas with Win 7 it will finish it on shutdown and startup.

I am using windows 10 as my main OS with a AMD Radeon HD 5830 and I haven't had any issues with the OS for gaming.

as I have said before the only thing I change is install classic shell as I don't like the start menu or the new control panel

Clunky? win7,8,10 run the same,, if your meaning slow, on many peoples computer win 8,10 boots up quicker but the actual logging in on windows 8 and 10 is slower for some reason on mine. But the actual using of 7,8 and 10 is much of muchness the same, as fast as each othe and layout pretty much the same, excluding the start menu. windows 8 doesnt seem as polished as win7 does, ie lock screen is very bold and in your face and the general look of windows is old looking.

The only things I have noticed with windows 8,, the look is terrible, but we get that, my external usb hdds spin down when ejecting from windows(this doesn't happen with win7), takes a few more seconds for 8 to totally boot up, when a game crashes in full screen, you cant close it without signing out of windows.

Windows 8 scales far better than Windows 7. Granted, the target audience of this forum probably won't notice this, but W8 is designed to scale back to tablets and so on, and does work much better on older hardware. That said, it's incompatible with some really old hardware (we're talking the first iterations of the Pentium 4 era here though).

How much real-world performance difference this is on a high-end system? I don't know, but I agreed with McGraw - Win 7 just feels 'clunkier' and it isn't as fluid as 8.1.

Mine logs in within seconds of starting to boot (I have auto login on my home system) and takes a few seconds longer at work (Q6600 and obviously needs to connect to the domain and process GPOs).

Win 8.1 and 10, stops for a few secs while logging in and then carries on, think its somthing todo with my R9 290 gfx card or drivers. So because of that problem win7 is still quicker at booting up, but thats not a big deal as I use sleep, not shutdown or log off

A bit of a strange problem here with mine now, when playing Music (mp3`s mainly) the music will stop and start (not stutter), on windows 8.1 all was hunky dorey, since moving up to 10 the problem has started in windows media player and the music app...
