I am not sure what S14 mean.

S14, thats a Nissan right?

Wonder how many are going to jump up and down moaning about RT not getting 10?
As long as they keep pushing out updates for a few years, or open the hardware so people can drop Android or whatever on it I dont think people can complain..

I also like the announcement that even hooky copies of 7/8/8.1 will get 10 free.

It's always been three months plus or minus a handful of days after RTM.

but if they want to have it released with systems out there ready to buy for back to school then surely they will launch before september.

really hoping for a surface pro 4 with skylake at launch.:D

Skylake won't be out in time. It's realise date is a but if a bigger it's to late for w10, but it's a bit silly waiting a whole year for a refresh to utilise it.
Almost certainly be less powerful than pro3 due to core M. But fatness and less power hungry.

And the reason it's 3 months, is you have to give manufactures time to finalise the specs, mass produce them and get them to store. So I can't see them shortening it.

i see your point, from what i can tell skylake is pointed to a Q3 launch and the core m variant should be out first so im still hopefull.

skylake core m would not be a compromise to a fanless design,i wont be happy if it will ship with the current core m.

Micro-payments inc, Want to press the start button without a 5 sec delay 5 dollars please.

Although does make me wonder what they are building in place to want to push pirates onto Windows 10.

Windows store, office 365, one drive, Skype etc etc etc.

Just like android and ios. OS in this day and age needs to be free and it's not where they make the money these days for consumers.

[venturebeat] Microsoft will offer free Windows 10 upgrades to pirates worldwide

In January, we learned that for one year, Microsoft would offer free Windows 10 upgrades to those running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1. Today, at its Windows Hardware Engineering Community (WinHEC) event in Shenzen, the company revealed that this deal will be available to pirates worldwide.

Reuters first broke the news by quoting Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Windows chief: “We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10.” Yet the article’s headline and body focused on China, where Windows piracy rates are particularly high, so we reached out to Microsoft to confirm the scope.

Makes sense to me. Even if you don't want to pay for Windows, MS still want to get their foot in the door with Bing, Office, Apps Store, Google-style online services and advertising, etc. as they transition to a Google business model.

If everyone wants to stick to Win 7, and millions all over the world in large countries like China and India won't pay for Win 10, MS has to give it away to get all their other offerings onto your desktop.

I just hope to god MS fix those icons...

i would be surprised if they made no distinction between upgrading a genuine and non genuine version of windows.

Here's hoping windows 10 with its universal apps will jumpstart the windows appstore and make it competitive with android/ios.

analyist predict windows tablets to triple with windows 10 and it wont be possible without those tablet optimized apps!

offering free upgrade to "dodgey" copies seems not right to me

I can see where they are coming from - dodgey copies not updated properly aren't good for anyone

yet if I go out and buy 2 Windows 8 licenses @ 50 quid each (which I did) - and upgrade to 10

and someone down road just uses a dodgey serial to install windows 8 and instantly gets free upgrade to 10 for nothing

all licences then all pukka

seems a bit unfair ?

so if you need any additional windows licences the year Windows 10 is released - whats the reason to buy it ?

or are they effectively saying like Apple that Windows 10 for first year is free for everyone

just don't want to market it like that

Yes, Win 10 is free for to install for everyone (that isn't a corporate customer) during the first year.

MS are responding to the market, and they've realised it's better to get some money out of the bundled services, than no money from people that want to stick to Win 7 forever.

The fact that you paid for a past OS isn't really relevant to the sort of model MS now seem to be moving towards. You're still getting the free upgrade, so it's not like you are losing out anyway.

I think they should be done with it and anounce it as free for everyone, Microsoft are the only company charging for its OS now Apple gives OSX away.

If I have read it correctly, it seems the free upgrade to Windows 10 will require your existing Windows to be installed on your system for
the upgrade process to work or even a clean install to work according to the info on the "The Windows Club" website below.

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-10-upgrade-path-process

If this is correct, I take it when doing a clean fresh install of Windows 10 via the media ISO you get for burning to disc, the upgrade process
when using the Windows 10 upgrade media disc will check that you have your existing Windows installed on your hard drive and perhaps
check the key and activation of it then give you an option to format the partition to replace the installed OS with Windows 10?

Also would this mean if you haven`t got your existing Windows installed on your hard drive, we will need to install
it first before we can even upgrade to Windows 10?

I was hoping the free upgrade wouldn't be like this and we would be getting a retail version that can be installed as
normal with just a new Windows 10 product key you get after sign up for the free upgrade.

It would have been much better when sign up for the free upgrade, if they gave you a full retail version with key after verifying online
during the sign up that you own a legal genuine version of Windows and you have it installed just for the one off verification.
