"With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mislicensed after the upgrade."

There never was a suggestion that they'd become genuine, it's simply that they are saying the genuine status isn't going to be a factor in whether an upgrade can commence.
A device being considered non genuine doesn't mean much, and I don't think it'll matter to anyone knowingly running non genuine copies of windows.
Windows Update already does a key check though?
i.e. If you're using an inactivated key then you won't be able to Windows Update. I'm sure they'll build intelligence around Windows Update as well.

To me that suggests that the Windows Update method to upgrade to W10 won't do any sort of Key check. It will just be applied like any other update.

Last week, Terry Meyerson, who heads up Microsoft's Windows division, told Reuters: "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10." He explained that this would help Microsoft "re-engage" with the hundreds-of-millions of potential customers in China in particular, who are currently running "non-genuine" (i.e. pirated) versions of Windows. ZDNet went on to confirm the offer wasn't just open to pirates in China, but around the world.
I am running Windows 10 upgraded from Windows 8.1 and have recently changed the motherboard. The Activate Windows tool popped up and I had to call the phoneline, went through and got the code fine but I only have boxes up to "G" and the phone code went up to "H", unsurprisingly enough it wouldn't activate.
My Windows 8.1 is totally legit and I tried it with another key with the same result, does anyone have any ideas? I figured that it may be that Windows 10 will only have 7 number groups but Windows 8.1 has 8 and so when you use a Windows 8.1 key it gives you 8 groups...
I'm toying with dropping it on my main rig at home again, tried it on my Surface Pro 3 and its not good enough yet, same as with my Dell V8p, desktop I think it might work though, anyone know of any issues that I might run into?

Can't wait for this to fully launch! I will be upgrading from 8.1 to this. Is it possible to do a clean install with windows 10 as a " upgrade from 8.1 " or do i need to upgrade from within windows ect ( i am on a laptop and the OS came installed from dell ) So i don't have the key available although im sure there are ways to find this from within windows?
I would prefer to do a fresh install so it's not cluttered up with old windows in the background or does this not happen?
Cheers
