Windows 10

I doubt they will offer W7 or 8 for cheap. They would just have a pre order offer on W10 like they have done in the past with new releases.

it looks like people running non-genuine (pirated) versions of Windows and wanting to upgrade to win 10 either can't or would still make it non-genuine.

"With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mislicensed after the upgrade."

tbh i agree that they shouldn't make it genuine after upgrade

There never was a suggestion that they'd become genuine, it's simply that they are saying the genuine status isn't going to be a factor in whether an upgrade can commence.

A device being considered non genuine doesn't mean much, and I don't think it'll matter to anyone knowingly running non genuine copies of windows.

This

As long as they can upgrade then the pirates won't care if it's non genuine according to the MS software law.

To me that suggests that the Windows Update method to upgrade to W10 won't do any sort of Key check. It will just be applied like any other update.

Perhaps Microsoft have finally come around and realised the best way to get people to adopt their OS is to practically give it away. If they offer this for future versions of Windows then we could never have to pay for Windows ever again!

I will be updating all my devices (at least 4) on release day, which is something I've never even considered with any previous Windows release.

Windows Update already does a key check though?

i.e. If you're using an inactivated key then you won't be able to Windows Update. I'm sure they'll build intelligence around Windows Update as well.

Hasn't been like that for years. When I'm building new PC's, I always run Windows Update first and activate last.

In Windows 8.1 I wasn't able to do that. May be the version I was using (Enterprise) but definitely I had to activate before Windows Update would work.

Same on there website if you want to use some of there 'free' tools you have to authenticate your key first.

hi guys, ive just installed win10 in a VM.

has anyone had any luck with getting black taskbar and window title areas but with white text?

i mainly use windows at home on my win8 tablet and htpc, black looks so much better in these scenarios but it seems MS have again limited everyone by removing white text as an option. it basically limits your colours no end.

if i've read it right, they was thinking/allowing it in china but then changed their minds

Last week, Terry Meyerson, who heads up Microsoft's Windows division, told Reuters: "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10." He explained that this would help Microsoft "re-engage" with the hundreds-of-millions of potential customers in China in particular, who are currently running "non-genuine" (i.e. pirated) versions of Windows. ZDNet went on to confirm the offer wasn't just open to pirates in China, but around the world.

I am running Windows 10 upgraded from Windows 8.1 and have recently changed the motherboard. The Activate Windows tool popped up and I had to call the phoneline, went through and got the code fine but I only have boxes up to "G" and the phone code went up to "H", unsurprisingly enough it wouldn't activate.

My Windows 8.1 is totally legit and I tried it with another key with the same result, does anyone have any ideas? I figured that it may be that Windows 10 will only have 7 number groups but Windows 8.1 has 8 and so when you use a Windows 8.1 key it gives you 8 groups...

Can't wait for this to fully launch! I will be upgrading from 8.1 to this. Is it possible to do a clean install with windows 10 as a " upgrade from 8.1 " or do i need to upgrade from within windows ect ( i am on a laptop and the OS came installed from dell ) So i don't have the key available although im sure there are ways to find this from within windows?

I would prefer to do a fresh install so it's not cluttered up with old windows in the background or does this not happen?

Cheers

Harry

i think because win10 isn't retail yet hence why MS put 1 key up on the win10 preview site for everybody to use.

I use it on my gaming rig, laptop and HTPC. Only issue I've run into is touch pad drivers on the laptop, everything else is pretty smooth going.

i don't think you'll be able to do a clean install because the upgrade is via windows update, so it'll be like any other update really..

you could do a system refresh after windows 10 is installed that why it'll be a clean install
