Windows 10

I imagine that they will convert the win 7/8/8.1 key to win 10, rendering the key unusable with anything other than win 10...but only in the first year, after that I imagine you'll have to pay...

So unless people convert their old keys, they'll lose them...

I wonder if windows 7/8/8.1 will suddenly be cheaper this year, so people buy it really cheap just to convert to win 10?

I'm curious how this will work with MSDN keys...

But my question is, if you dont grab the iso within the first year, even if you installed Win 10 and used a preexisting 7/8 key then did a reformat after the one year period, you would presumably have to pay?

Unless you have a copy of the original iso.

the free upgrade is via windows updates

MS hasn't said they'll be releasing a iso.

but either way, i get what you mean.. i'm guessing/hoping they'll put a backup tool or tool to make a win10 media within windows

Thought 10049 was the latest!?!?...

Mine took about 10 hours!! I was the victim of the 'All Language Pack' bug which installs Every conceivable language pack rather than just English!!

Causes 2 things (that are noticeable) 1) It takes upward of 8 hours to install, 2) Boot time (even with Fastboot ticked) takes 10 minutes!

Uninstall all the extra languages (I don't think I'll need 8 Chinese variants!!) and boot time is back to a respectable 45 seconds!

If that was in reply to me, then I was already on build 10049, it took an absolute age to do an update to what I assumed would be a new build, but nope!

Then you install it.

You won't have to buy it.

It's like saying those of us who got win8 for £25 would have to rebuy as there was no media.

May well be the case windows 10 will accept w8.1 keys. So if you do a fresh install via upgrade, get yourself an iso of release w10 you can reformat and just use that. If you ever need to reformat that is

Ms and no, no physical media.

This really is a non issue and bizarre you even think it is going to be.

No physical media, however there was an ISO :)

I agree though, can't see it being an issue. It'll be the same as the MCE addon that was offered free with Windows 8. You had to activate it before a certain date. As long as you did that, you could reinstall to your heart's content and it'd continue working.

There wasn't an ISO to begin with, it was that silly windows update program.

You can download Windows 8.1 installations direct from Microsoft. Why would they not do that for 10?

Your paying for the key, not the physical disk with the installation files on it.

So what your saying is, after the one year free upgrade, if you need to reformat, you can just download the files form MS and use Win7/Win8 key?

I don't think that's how it works. After year 1, you will have to pay.

The details aren't confirmed yet. But your suggestion would require MS to offer people a downgrade option after a year.

My understanding (not confirmed) is that your W7/8/8.1 key will become a valid W10 key once you upgrade, and will stay that way. How you reformat/reinstall or whatever from then on is irrelevant. My Windows 7 keys are all "upgrade" keys that I have used on clean installs tens of times.

This is my understanding as well, in that any key that is "upgraded" cannot be used on a previous OS...

My only concern is how it works with MSDN keys...
