Windows 10

Isn't that kind of the point though?

W8 was a leap backwards for desktops. W10 will bring the desktop world forward as a lot of people have simply ignored W8 if they don't have a touch screen.

All they need to do is make W10 a polished desktop OS, then bring in all the W8.1 tablet features, whack on a "use table mode" button in the settings, and be onto a winner.

Tablet users are not the audience W10 is trying to please at the moment.

This is how I see it....

The only thing that would make life better with windows 10 is not to have to "switch" to tablet mode on my HP Split, I want to be able to just disconnect the screen and go tablet mode without turning on the tablet mode option...

I suppose so, but not sure why they couldn't have kept that from the outset - it's almost like they are ignoring that W8/8.1 even exists and started development of Win10 from a Win7 codebase :p

It's not the end of the world really as 8.1 works great for my needs, but given the proposed release date I'm struggling to see how they can make it tablet-friendly in such a relatively short time - maybe Windows 10.1 will be the tablet OS :p

Haven't MS been pretty upfront that the Technical Previews don't include all the tablet focused features. Don't think that just because the features aren't there yet doesn't mean they won't be at all. Its only a preview. The public release is also not going to be anywhere near where they are in terms of overall development.

That way I understand it is that they are toning the preview towards desktop users, to appeal more to the corporate side. with the tablet features, such as auto switching, only available in the final RTM...

Anyone else having problems with full screening apps (eg. remote desktop) not changing it's res or resizing?

So i went up to 10049 at home and no problems with drivers like at work. The old start menu does not work any more. But i have got used to the new one, its not that bad and i prefer the application list to the old with as it works with the mouse wheel and is grouped by letter. They also added the date on to the taskbar.

One thing that needs work is the colour of the taskbar and start menu. The best they had it was the first build where you could set the colour of the start menu independently of the window title bars and taskbar. Other than that all the old problems i pointed out are still there and none of my suggestions have been added. I am sure its the same for most of the suggestions from the insider program, i think that was all but a waste of time. Would be good if transparency tiles worked with windows and not just the phone. I realy hate the colourised blocks, even in its current state. I would much prefer a text with a small icon like it used to be. You can barely even make out the steam icon the background looks that bad.

I understand win 10 is free during it's first year.

I understand it will be deliverable through various means including windows update?

However, lets use the scenario, you've upgraded to Win 10. Over a year has elapsed. You want to reformat.

You still have your win 7 or 8.1 legit key. Will you have to buy? Or if your clever you will download the full iso, during the first year of the OS's life so that that when the free window (no pun intended) is over, you can just reinstall using your preexisting win 7/8.1 key?

Is anyone having issues with build 10041 and synaptics touchpad?

The mouse keeps freezing up on me and none of the gestures work, highly annoying.

had the same, and to some degree still having with 10049.=, sometimes still freezes or stutters.

Also having onedrive sync problems, blank login screen after hibernation or sleep - seems to be a bug becasue if you CTRL ALT DEL the normal login screens apears.... and audio service not running issues.

Random issue, using my 360 pad caused stuttering and lag in game when pressing a button or moving a stick

Both wired and wireless controllers have the same issue so it looks like the driver :(

Edit: Looks like a USB thing. I'm getting lag on mouse and keyboard inputs in CS:GO too.

I was just thinking exactly the same thing. I presume (or hope) that upon the initial installation we'll be issued with a cd key.

I imagine that they will convert the win 7/8/8.1 key to win 10, rendering the key unusable with anything other than win 10...but only in the first year, after that I imagine you'll have to pay...

So unless people convert their old keys, they'll lose them...

I wonder if windows 7/8/8.1 will suddenly be cheaper this year, so people buy it really cheap just to convert to win 10?

I'm curious how this will work with MSDN keys...
