Windows 10

I think my Windows 8.1 tablets actually does better than both 10 and 7 when it comes to updates - pretty much almost no issues and way faster to update despite being some of the lowest spec systems I run.

EDIT: Forgot I've also got a Linx 7 on Windows 8 as well as the Toshiba.

is there a process to totally stop win 10 home from updating drivers ? basically one of my pcs on win 10 home is updating a gpu driver and monitor driver to ones that make issues.i havent seen from searching a way that works on recent builds.this is win 10 home.

You don't need chipset drivers, works fine without (most important is ahci drivers, and msahci works fine), and who needs Windows updates, they break more than they fix... (Yes **** security, for the average home user...).

Dad's still on Skylake, in Windowx XP x64 and satisfied.

As you wish, YMMV. Doesn't change the fact there's no official support.

My work laptop is one of the ThinkPads on the very short specially approved list for new machines that are allowed to officially run Windows 7.

Anyone use Windows 10 with a 3D Printer LOL? usually I use an SD card due to reduced amount of things that could interrupt printing that way but for one job it would have been useful to drive it from a computer - was going to use one of my tablet 2 in 1s and then remembered Windows update :s

Can't MS do one useful thing and give back proper controls over updates :|

I don't seem to get offered the latest version of windows over windows update. I got offered the anniversary update, I didn't get offered the next one (creators?) and still haven't been offered the latest. Windows update is working as it's constantly offering various updates for my version, but never prompts me to go the newer version of 10. It's the same on both of my machines.

I know I can get it manually using the update helper thing, but why don't I get offered it over windows update? is it broken?

I have found that you can download the latest update via Windows Update, but if you still have the recovery files from the previous big update (windows.old to recover backwards to the previous version), then the newer version won't ever install. It's almost like it refuses to install because it can't make backup files of your current install, even though it says it's ready to install.

To fix it, open an explorer window, right click on your system drive, choose "properties", then "disk cleanup", then "clean up system files". Select everything, do the cleanup. I've seen this take an hour on a machine that had never had this done before, so just leave it to finish. Then you should get the update to download via Windows Update, and this time it will install correctly (this may also take a long time).

Well it happened again with the January 2018 update! (see my post above Dec 13th) Updating the latest quality update (2018-01) via Windows Update didn't work - install stuck at 99% installed (after hours!). Had to clear the windows update "SoftwareDistribution" folders and then install the whole file from the Microsoft update download page. Getting fed up with this rigmarole. My wife's z97 PC installed the update in minutes and my yoga installed it with no hassle. MUST be the age of my CPU (i7/920 - X58) / board?

I have a i7 950 and have a number of issues with windows 10 on it so I stick with 7.

My start menu after about four reboots decides to stop working completely and all the fixes online don't work.

I get a number of blue screen of deaths relating to memory management but my ram is fine after running memtest for 8 hours. I don't get this issue at all on w7

I'm getting fed up with Win10 and things breaking every time there's an update. Just let my 2nd PC update with the latest big one and I've been pulling my hair out fixing things. Nice of them to reset my nicely organised start panel too.

What will I miss out on by going back to Windows 7 gaming wise?

Is there some Windows 10 app to strip everything down to bare bones and get rid of all the superfluous rubbish? I've gone back to metered mode and edited GP now to stop further updates so I can game in peace.

Hello "MagicBoy" - any ideas what is causing it then? I would like to resolve so that updates just install!

Not sure, seems to be a relatively common problem on most families of Intel CPU/Chipset from what I've seen at work. I've had some success in the past installing it manually either via the .MSU file or failing that via offline servicing (DISM) from the command line on troublesome machines.

That's a good question - built it 8 years ago (approx.) - not sure!
Reason why I ask is that when I first got my SSD I used the marvel controller and did a lot of Google research as to why I could not get the full speed of the SSD and this was because the marvel controller was crap on thex58 boards and many comments said to avoid it so I stuck with the Intel one but only could get 250mb read and write on the SSD. I was ok with this as it was still much faster than using a normal HDD before.

I was wondering if the Marvel controller was adding to your issues, Marvel are disabled in the bios for me.
