Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Which version of Windows 8 is everyone using as their main OS? As far as I can see, there's the Release Preview, the Developer version and another one I think, are they all the same?

I think I've discovered how this might be good, Desktop on my main screen with metro on my secondary. Pretty sweet! This would be perfect with a Metro version of Winamp or Foobar.
Have you found a way to keep the metro screen live on monitor 2 whilst you interact with the desktop/desktop app?

As soon as I click anything on the "traditional" desktop metro minimises and I have 2 x desktops (one on each monitor). It'd be good to keep screen 2 running with metro live tiles/metro apps displaying info etc whilst I played a game/whatever on screen 1

A few of use have the RTM )i.e. final) version through MSDN and TechNet subscriptions. Volume license customers (i.e. companies with Enterprise Agreements etc) also have access to Win8 Enterprise RTM now as well.

Release Preview here but there is RTM if you have an msdn subscription or W8 Enterprise from TechNet for a 90 day evaluation, don't think Enterprise has any Media Centre though which is intentional I believe.

Anyone who has an MSDN/Technet account will have moved to the Windows 8 Pro RTM.

I think the Release Preview would be the last of the betas, and the most feature complete.

If I were to install the Enterprise version and keep it as an evaluation until it's released in Oct, could I then enter a non Enterprise serial key to continue using it as a lesser version? I'm looking for the best way to start using Win8 that's going to mean not re-installing on consumer release day.

Not sure, the Enterprise Edition was a separate ISO to Windows 8 standard/pro which are on the same ISO.

Why would you want the Enterprise Edition anyway. Can't you use the other editions fro 90 days?

I dunno :p I'll look in to it a bit more and see if I can figure out which version is going to be the one to install/upgrade to (Windows 8 Pro RTM by the sounds of it, if it allows use for 90 days).

Don't think there's any trial period for "normal/rtm" Win8, you have to enter a key/activate on install, if you don't for any reason half the "stuff" is deactivated. I've also heard the 90 eval version will not let you upgrade/enter a key to activate to full version and will just time out after 90 days (to get around people fudging the time/ etc to have an eternal "90" day trial of the full version) I could be wrong though.

i have the Enterprise edition which is being offered to non technet, and it has not got the Media center installed, if you want it, then you have to pay for it. But, there are plenty of free software out there to fill the void.

The Enterprise Edition can't have the WMC addon. Its on Windows 8 Pro which allows WMC addon.

Is there really no way to get a start menu back? My whole 'workflow' is just buggered without it. Metro on second screen and normal windows 7 style desktop on the other would be perfect.

There are third party tools, but what difficulty are you having? It takes some time to adjust.
