as far as I know this hasn't been confirmed, just a very strong possibility, the story originated from Paul Thurrott and Mary Jo Foley, co-hosts of the Windows Weekly show
Backed up by a document that didn't show a retail version. But didn't explicitly say there would be non either.

Of course nearly everything's speculation ATM, as Microsoft is keeping it close to their chest. We will find out all on 5 of september.

If it isn't full version you will be able to get money back from false advertising. And also Distance selling regs.

As far as I Remember it simply doesn't say anything about retail, rather than saying no retail is available. ms can also change their mind as they have done many times.
 
Just installed W8 RTM on an Acer AIO PC and its running like a dream :) The touchscreen aspect is 110% better than W7 its much more precise and the whole new start section is perfect for this type of device. I have not really had to use the desktop mode. Really enjoying the new OS from Microsoft.

Just a couple of little niggles I have encountered;

When your in the new start section and you have opened a few apps and swipe the left side you can see what you have opened how do you close them with the touchscreen? You can right click on the mouse and select close but I cannot work it out?

Also a huge bug is when using the mouse and you move to the bottom left to select the start menu or to right click to see control panel etc. you cannot do this using touchscreen it won't let you do it.

I think MS have mad a bit of a mistake with the above? Unless I am stupid of over looking something?
 
You can still go through the charms and get to control panel. The right click is for desktop. So I don't think that's a mistake.
Do you mean how to close an app?
If so just put finger at top of screen and swipe down to the bottom.
 
just downloaded windows 8 professional 32bit for my Acer iconia W500 tab.

got customer preview on atm will install ina bit and see if there are many differences

Windows 8 System Builder Licensing – Important Changes Coming

As we continue to make progress toward the launch of Windows 8, we want to provide insight into some important changes coming in the System Builder License terms for Windows 8.

Note some of the information was announced on the Windows Team Blog (windowsteamblog.com). The purpose of this communication is to give you more information about these changes so that you can discuss them with your applicable partners.

1. Changes in Retail License.

• As a reminder, for Windows 7, there are two retail license types that are offered
o A full license of Windows 7 for installation by end users on a PC that does not have a previous version of Windows installed on it
o An upgrade license of Windows 7 that upgrades a PC with a previous version of Windows to Windows 7
• The majority of consumers buying the retail license are looking to upgrade. For Windows 8, Microsoft will therefore only offer an upgrade version of Windows 8 through the retail channel. This is the license an end user would purchase who wants to upgrade their current PC from a prior version of Windows to Windows 8.

2. Changes in Windows 8 System Builder License.

• In view of this change, the System Builder license for Windows 8 will include a (“Do It Yourself” or DIY rights) license for end users who wish to build their own PC for their personal use or install Windows as an additional operating system in a virtual machine or a separate partition. These users will also be able to purchase and install the System Builder product.

• End users who wish to use System Builder product for the above purposes will have to accept the End User License Agreement (EULA) in place of System Builder License. Under the terms of the EULA, the licensor is Microsoft instead of the System Builder, and support from Microsoft is not included. In addition, the following key licensing terms will apply to the end user:
o System Builder product may only be used:
 As the operating system on a PC you build for personal use OR
 As an operating system running in either a local virtual machine or as additional operating system in a separate partition

o System Builder product may not be used:
 As an upgrade license to an existing underlying Windows operating system
 To legalize from a non-genuine Windows operating system
 To license more than five copies of the software (in total) for commercial use

Please note that the changes described here apply only to Windows 8, not to Windows 7.

So to get to control panel or other various window settings like device manger I have to swipe the right hand side and go into metro? Seems a very long way of doing things? When it only takes a right click of a mouse.

Swiping done does close the app thank you :)
 
I wouldn't hold my breath for a discounted OEM version, as you need a license either way. The upgrade offer is there to provide an incentive for those who already have a perfectly good OS.
 
Hopefully the OEM/System Builder version will be cheaper than an upgrade one though... I would certainly hope so anyway!
 
...and the price of an upgrade is an incremental cost over whatever you paid for your original license.

System Builder is a full OS for a new machine, I'd reckon it will be at least double if not treble (£50-75) what the online upgrade price is quoted as. Anything less will be a really nice surprise.
 
The student version of windows will be full wont it, how much for that is likely

New install of windows and a new dl from your link and its apparently not possible to reinstall directx like this. win8 comes with a newer version or something like that.
I presume theres no other reason why it'd error on a new install and everyone gets a similar result
