Windows Home Server

There was a data corruption bug in the first release, but that's long since been patched.

Due to the way the disks are managed by WHS, it's advisable NOT to use third party defrag tools, but that's as scary as it gets, no need to worry.

thats good news, dont want my pics, movies etc to become corrupt!

I take it WHS can run media center?

My setup is WHS , PS3 media server for WHS and PS3

I'm in the middle of setting up a WHS box for a mate, and was looking at PS3 media server to stream .mkv to an Xbox - are you using the latest stable or Beta, and how are you finding it? I'm loathe to use anything that may undermine the stability of the WHS box (I'll never live it down if it starts blue-screening as he's starting to go to the dark side (iPap) ) :(

I'm using the latest stable release and it solid as a rock.

I have had zero problems with it. The setup is the heart of my home cinema.;)

I love WHS:cool:

Right, I've installed the Vail beta on a test machine and so far its backing up my two machines which is fine. However, how do I get the server to host all the media, photos, music etc on my desktop so I can view them on the laptop with the desktop off?

Also does this also work with a Mac, i.e the sharing/streaming of media?

/end noob content

How does WHS handle user accounts in terms of multiple clients, can you just create the users on the WHS and login or do you have to create them on each client?

You create them on the WHS box, and then log in from the client - the system is much simpified if the username/password on the client matches the one (of many) on the WHS box, though that isn't mandatory.

My head hurts! Having gone round the internet in circles for the best part of a day, and in spite of the fact that in the 'installation' explanation on We Got Served:

Installation Instructions

- Download PS3 Media Server from http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/
– Install PS3 Media Server to your Windows Home Server by remote desktop
Install PS3 Media Server For WHS via Windows Home Server Console

Am I correct in assuming that there is no longer an "add-in" for WHS that is run via the console - (PS3 Media Server 1.10.5 ) It appears that you have to remote desktop the WHS and run the PS3 server? Or am I missing something - the 'explanations' are pretty thin on the ground, I suspect that I'm digging too deep, but it feels like I'm missing something...

Ok - now I do feel thick :( I've downloaded the .exe which installs PS3 Media Server on the WHS box (via remote desktop) but can't find any way to add it to the console as an add-in? Is there an .msi file or is it supported to install itself, or do I have the wrong version?

Having problems with my server at the moment. I get the following error message when I boot:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\Windows\System32\Config\System

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original cd rom. Selct 'r' at the first screen to repair.

I've booted from my usb (all whs files on there) and it takes me straight to the installation screen and I can't see an option for repairing. If I go through the options I get to one for server re-installation. Am I doing the right thing? Don't want to mess it all up and lose all my data!

Update: Just tried to do the re-installation and it went through the options but came back to another screen and clicking through these options it only gives me new server installtion option. Don't want to do this cos I'll lose all my data. Where do I go next?

I had a similar problem trying to do a repair.
The system HD needs to be the first one seen by the install program. On my system the first HD seen by my BIOS wasn't the same as the what the install program saw as the first HD.

I solved it by removing all my data disks and leaving only the system disk. I then connected it so that it was the first HD seen by the install program to avoid future problems.
