Windows Home Server

I had a similar problem trying to do a repair.
The system HD needs to be the first one seen by the install program. On my system the first HD seen by my BIOS wasn't the same as the what the install program saw as the first HD.

I solved it by removing all my data disks and leaving only the system disk. I then connected it so that it was the first HD seen by the install program to avoid future problems.

My system drive is drive 0 but it still only gives me the option to do a new install.

Which disk should I be using for the re-install? Just wondering what the home computer restore cd is for?

Home computer restore is for your 'client' machines - if one of them fails you use that as the boot cd to get them rebuilt from the server.

One other thing you can try, disconnect all drives apart from the system drive and then boot from the WHS install dvd - see if you get the option to repair (BUT DON'T DO IT!!!) - then at least you know it can repair, and can play around with the drive order. Remember that you need all the drives connected when you do the repair! (The system disk needs to be physically plugged into sata port 0 - not just recognised as the 1st drive by the system)

The drive is in sata port 0 but still no joy. Luckily I did a backup to an external drive last week so I'm just going to do a fresh reinstall and then copy everything from the backups.

Have you tried the drive on its own in all of the ports? Might be worth a go for future reference, when I had this problem it was a matter of plugging it into a different port

All back up and running now, gotta be thankful for external backups!

Anyway, I'm now looking to get a new motherboard with more sata connections as my current board only has 2. I've seen a Gigabyte Atom on here that would suit my needs. So, my question now is - if I change my board can I just connect it up to the drives and then do a re-install rather than a new install?

zom, sorry not sure on your quesiton but wondered what specs your current build is and what's the model of the gigabyte mb you're looking at?

This is the one I'm looking at:

Gigabyte D510

I've currently got an Intel board:

Intel D945GCLF2D

It's been ok but it's only got 2 sata connections and I now need 4.

Another question as well! I know I can backup my server to an external usb. Can I do the same with eSATA?

You *should* be able to do this - it's exactly what I did when I upgraded my mobo/cpu and it worked a treat for me - the nice thing is that you have an external backup - so, TBH, it's probably less headache to re-install from fresh.

I've setup a vail test system, and currently I am failing on a point of idiocy.

I wish to use a remote desktop, so I can scroll about the vail system and install programs remotely, as the server is now running headless.
I am on a windows 7 machine, and I can't see a remote desktop within dashboard or launchpad settings. I can browse to both, but how does one run executables on the vail system remotely?

-edit
I should add
When I try remote login, and when I try remote desktop connection within windows, i go through the process and I am met by an error

'The connection was denied because the user account is not authorised for remote login'
In user accoutn settings, remote access is allowed for that account on the vail server.

You need to login to remote desktop using the administrator account, not a user account. I rdp to my server all the time, even for dashboard tasks.

Is it possible to enable AHCI after I've installed WHS? I used F6 and installed the drivers but when I checked today it shows as native ide. I want to use a sata rack so I can just stick a drive in and do backups but it's not being recognised.

Don't really want to install WHS again as I only did it last week and I've got it all runiing how I want it.

Never mind. I found an esata card in my box of tricks in the loft and that works a treat.

Houston we have a problem

My i7 rig is not backing up.

I have run chkdsk and the SSD is fine.

Any ideas?

I have run into a problem.

I came home from work and my main PC was not connected to the Server

I plugged a monitor in the server was just restarting...getting to the Splash screen getting through about 3 cycles of the loading bar and then restarting. :(

I booted from USB stick and ran Memtest and got 3000+ errors on the ram.

I swapped the ram out with some other stuff and ran memtest again. This time error free.

All my drives can be seen in the bios and they check ok AT THE BIOS SCREEN

But the server won't boot..so it looks like a corrupt OS

Anyone done a server reinstallation with all the storage pool drives attached? And not lost any data?

I am so paranoid that if I do a server reinstall something will go wrong and I will be boot and see the storage drives not added to the pool ort without data.

I have 8TB- 4TB actual data without duplication

Can anyone offer any reassurance on server reinstallation?

As far as I'm aware, you can reinstall the OS without loosing any data on the data drives (I've done it before - you just pick reinstall and not new install).

This is why I backup my data to external drives too. At the end of the day, your PSU could die, killing your disks too. Then you'd be totally stuffed.
