Windows SMP Beta goes Open

What's is it doing to demonstrate its instability?

Are your temps OK? Are you overclocked?

random full system crashing. No overclocks and the hottest core is running no higher than 52C. I have done rendering, video compression etc which runs the cores at full before with no instability so im a bit confused as to what is going on.

I think Gromacs pushes your CPU harder than rendering and video compression.

I can't see why it would cause instability at those temps and at stock speeds, the only thing I can think of would be either a hardware incompatability that hasn't showed up yet or perhaps the Folding client is conflicting with something

Bear in mind that it is only in buggy beta stages yet. If you continue having problems and can deffinitley say its Folding causing the problem post on the official forums so they can investigate.

No more smp for me.
My machine got to 90% of a workunit and then at some point in the early hours of the morning somehow must have switched itself off.

No idea why, temps were fine.
In total though i've lost an entire work unit, so enough is enough.

My machine is unstable i think, but its impossible to fix because it only bsods about once a month and then has occasional problems where it won't boot or will switch itself off like this. The bsods haven't been the same thing either.

Its too intermittent for me to find out what it is by swapping hardware about, however when i rma'd my board i got a no fault found one as a replacement and i suspect it is actually faulty in some small way.

Can't rma it though as its impossible to prove that its the board and impossible to replicate the problems, because the problems vary and only happen occasionally.
Its definitely got hardware problems though.

All the stability/stress tests pass fine, however.

Of course it could be that folding itself caused this problem, but because i have other problems that suggest dodgy hardware i can't really run dodgy software on dodgy hardware and expect to get a higher ppd than with the normal client, because it'll just keep loosing wus.

Well I could use a little help installing smp onto a new laptop ive just bought. Have installed this on 2 other machines with no problems, however, they were XP and this uses Vista.

When I try to install using install.bat I put the correct login and password details but I then get a sock error stating that:

generic socket failure, error stack:
MPIDU_sock_post_connect1228 unable to connect to laptop on port 8676 exhausted all endports errno -1

then it goes on to say "no connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it" errno 10061.

Ideas people?

As you say - low guarenteed points are better than high 'maybe' points. ;)

Keep up the good work Joe
Thanks.

I certainly plan to start running the linux smp client in a few weeks time, as i'm hoping the greater ppd from that will easily offset any problems i may have with it.

I'm going to be moving my system to a new case with lots of new quieter fans and an overall better solution for running 24/7.

Edit: Neither of my normal clients can connect to the assignment server...

Edit2: I can't connect to the stanford server stats page either.

Edit3: One of them has got a wu now so i'm guessing the assignment servers are a little busy.
In other news, i've just discovered that my isp has upgraded us from 2mb to 8mb broadband. woot. :p

I've just gone back to the linux SMP client.

It was taking 3 or 4 attempts to get the Windows SMP client running and it only managed to finish two WUs since starting it on Monday morning.

Reset my overclock to stock last night to see if it was an unstable oc, but came home today to find it had ended its current WU early again at 60% and didn't start a new one :(

stanfords having IT problems, servers all over the place.
Yep.

"3/22/2007 Stanford School of Medicine Network Outage
The main net for the school of medicine (and much of Folding@home) went down at about 8am pacific time. For now, stats and the assignment servers are down. Many of the data servers are up, as they are spread out on other networks. Stanford IT is working to get it up ASAP. We will post more news as we hear it. "

If I wish to try SMP out then I need to close each console when it finishes a project? Or will SMP carry on with existing projects if they are unfinished?

tbh I just stopped the service installed ones cos their deadlines are AGES away
but you could use the -oneunit or -pause to end them after this unit

The SMP client can't do standard WUs - like VeNT said either just stop the standard clients where they are (given a few days to try out the SMP) or use the flags to finish off the work first
