I don't think so, for my area the precipitation differences between BBC and metoffice are rather large.

Oh fair enough. I just always remember seeing met office tagged to all bbc forecast maps on the tv in the past

Met office stilë showing snow all day tomorrow and friday as well anyway.

We used to have snow a lot worse than this in the 70s and 80s and it didn't cause anywhere near as many problems as a couple of inches cause these days.

It's almost comical! Such a media over-reaction and the majority of people, being the way they are these days, just seem to lap it up!

In the 80s it was not uncommon to see 2 or 3 feet or snow where I lived. The whole street would be out clearing the roads so people could get to work. I remember opening the back door to a wall of snow!

I'm beginning to sound like a grumpy old git these days but it's just pathetic.

There were far fewer cars on the roads back in the 80's and many using them had much shorter commute distances.

I'd still agree there's an overreaction though as it's another story they can spin all day.

Whereabouts are you, Fife or something?
Nope, Clydebank but it never snows here normally, really coming down heavily now.

Couple of bad potato cam pics.

Pics not working for some reason, I'll try and sort them later.

Fewer cars and a shorter commute was the reason the people managed a lot better than they do today?

There was obviously fewer cars compared to today, but every house in my local area had at least one car, we had 3! People in my family were travelling the same distances to work as they still do today.

I think the main problem today is that the majority of people wrap themselves up in cotton wool too much and take too much notice of the media.

Back then, people just got on with it, these days though, after a couple of inches... Snowmageddon and Snowpocalypse and The Beast from the East!

Give me a break!

I think now that the Met Office is issuing the most severe warning that should tell us that for once this isn't entirely media-spin (though I doesn't mean the media aren't spinning it as well) - there hasn't been a "Red" warning in ages

Yes, it's one of the reasons and goes against your anecdotal evidence.

Plenty of people have tried to get into work today, you're acting like most people just don't bother, which isn't the case at all.

There is congestion and traffic jams now without the weather so when you add it to the mix it can create havoc depending on how bad it is in your local area.

The problem with snow is that it is often very localized so people who happen to be where there is none or very little assume everywhere else is the same...

I haven't referred to people not bothering, I'm referring to people being terrified of a little snow.

You don't need to tell anyone in the UK how bad the road network is, and how close it is to mayhem at any given moment.

So you're saying the reason why some people say it's not that bad while others say the opposite is because they don't have as much snow?

How many inches have we had?

Couldn't agree more.

I'm a postie and we got told earlier to bring back everything we hadn't delivered yet to the office because of the Red weather warning and there are no collections today either.

I was getting round the delivery ok as well, i guess it's going to be bad later.

Well if the number of people being terrified of a little snow is an issue for you they wouldn't be out there trying to get to work.

It's the media who hype it up, not your normal day to day folk just trying to get by.

You seem a bit focused on me mentioning getting to work when I'm not specifically talking about that - I just used it as an example in my previous post to show how people got on with things back then.

But basically, you're saying people are just as tough these days as they were back in the 70s and 80s, which is just your opinion, but I disagree.

I could ask you how old you are and where you are from to explore this further but I can't be bothered. ;)

Well, that seemed to be the main point of your initial post on people shovelling the streets to get everyone to work.

On average people likely aren't as tough but I don't think snowfall is the issue as from what I can tell they still attempt to travel in it, nowadays though an employer or social media can warn people not to travel or where accidents are, whereas in the 80's that would have been a phone call to each individual employee or getting delayed information on the TV/radio.

I'm pretty certain new rules and regulations are in place now regarding asking employees to travel in this type of weather, so in that sense, we've certainly got a little softer, although it's likely a much more sensible approach.

What a disappointment this snowmageddon is for the NW coast, majority of snow melted and all the snow from the east keeps dying out at the M6 corridor

Last decent event was 2010 :(

Stopped at my parents after work, decided to try and drive home...had to abandon the car lol.

Small video, I'm not that unfit but it's quite cold with the wind and had to walk quite a bit back to my parents. Still no sign of stopping.
