WINTER 2018/2019 - Chat thread!

Really?
I'm just north of Stevenage. Just snowed for a bit, but was too wet to settle. Fully expect it to be nice and slippery tomorrow morning though.

At times like this I miss living at the bottom of a hill in Hitchin. Was comedy gold first thing in the morning. Best was a brand new *Sub 6 months old* BMW M5 failing to stop and sliding into a Land Rover Discovery, complete with tow bar. Ouch... They both pulled over and the BMW driver got out and and started having a shout at the Landy owner. Unfortunately for him, he forgot to close his door. Cue another BMW sliding down the hill and taking out his door. :D

Even back at St Albans there was a lot less. It was really localised. I couldn’t be too bothered to clear my car too much - I seemed to be the only one covered in a load of snow.

Thawed out a lot this morning.

Quick, run to Asdas for the bread and milk

Queue for checkouts up the aisles to the back of the shop! At least thats what happened here last time snow was forecast (it never arrived. Shelves were empty for days)

Just rain here last night, as usual. Damn cold today though, but sunny. Kent got snow but then they always do (coast facing the north sea)

So, how accurate is all this:

Yep, it’s The Sun and Mr Madden, but also references Met Office.
Not seeing anything in current Met forecasts or Meteo.

Probably not very. Though there is a lot of potential for cold weather it just doesn't seem to manage to break through. Some are trying to be optimistic but realistically the model output tonight is pretty bleak if you want real wintery weather - we are about to go into a brief cooler snap but very very marginal for any real snow other than on higher ground - probably some will see sleet and damp snow. Chances of any wintery blast from the East are fast vanishing in the short to medium term and though there is a bit of a chance for some cold from the North East it is probably not going to reach more than Scotland. Still tentative signs the jet stream might be pushed away in the long term but its been "in the long term" for the last few weeks.

Realistically a lot of those runs need to be going below -10 to get real wintery weather in this country.

Stafford (West Midlands) had an icing sugar dusting of snow a few days ago which was melted by 11AM. This is the norm really since 1996. Yes 2010 and 2018 were harsh winters but still nothing over 10cm. In the meantime, we seem to get 28C+ heatwaves that occupy the whole of the summer in recent years which is a different kettle of fish because if you're too cold you put on an extra layer, but if you're too hot then you can't strip down naked.

YELLOW WARNING OF SNOW for 'Central, Tayside & Fife', 'Grampian', 'Highlands & Eilean Siar'
Updated 26 January at 1029 GMT
Valid from 1800 GMT on Sat 26 January to 1200 GMT on Sun 27 January
Snow and ice expected across northern Scotland, with blizzards possible on high ground.
- Some transport likely to be affected by snow, leading to potentially longer journey times
- Icy surfaces on roads and pavements could lead to an increased likelihood of accidents and injuries

Looking likely that almost all of the south is going to get a fair wallop of snow on Tuesday/Wednesday. Wxcharts is showing a huge band of it moving slowly from west to east over the course of 36 hours.

Outlook seems to have changed quite dramatically all of a sudden. Forecasts say a fair bit of snow for the midlands on Tues/Wed now.

Looks like a decent offering of snow Tuesday night and then a lot of snow Thursday into Friday in Hertfordshire. Forecast could change, but good odds on a Friday snow day I reckon.

Talking about dramatically:

If some of those runs came off ground level temperatures would be potentially breaching 15C in February - the high pressure predicted to be sitting over Europe at the end of the current output would only have to shift slightly and we'd be in with a shout of matching the warmest temperatures measured in February. I think there is going to be quite a bit of change though over the next few days in output.

Arpege is pretty pessimistic for snow other than high ground and more often right than wrong.

Thursday/Friday is the one I am curious about. Will probably all turn to rain.

I'm glad I'm not alone! :D

Some places are almost certainly going to see snow over the coming week but as things stand it looks short lived and turning to rain pretty quickly for most. The weather model outputs tonight (well the mid-day Sunday runs) are all over the shot with things in all the wrong places or unexpected places so possibly the model runs in the morning will give a better picture.

EDIT: Overnight runs basically = anything possible but backing off the potential for near record breaking mildness - be interesting to see the morning updates.

Wintry Week!

Temperatures still really marginal for snow though and it is such a mess as can be seen in the video. Today's outputs seem to have backed off potential for near record mildness after this colder few days but as per the video it is difficult to pin down any real detail.

EDIT: I'd hate to work for the Met even with the information they have - atleast from my fairly basic understanding it seems like many elements of the weather aren't quite behaving as you'd expect at the moment.

Quite happy with a bit of milder weather please :D
Seems from the local forecasts, that round here Thursday looks more likely for snow than tomorrow night.
Hopefully just a dusting...
