The met office did a good job in my opinion. Was it the worst in history? No. However it was probably the most prepared, analysed and well executed.

The met office have to message based on the distribution of probabilistic scenarios over time. The resulting damage all depends what is in the path and that's way too many variables other than apply an alert based on estimated maximum windspeeds.

So - hats off to the met.

I don't remember much of the 87 storm itself but I remember the aftermath - at least around here it wasn't even close to 87 - maybe half a dozen trees down total, in 87 was half a dozen down in just one small area, loads of roofs gone, etc.

Yesterday was certainly the worst storm I've ever been aware of, the gusts up our road were insane from about 1000 to 1300. The tall conifer tree opposite lost at least four 7m+ sections, while a house literally around the corner lost its roof.

I would have been 13 back in the '87 storm, but back then I was living in Heswall in Wirral and I don't recall the storm hitting us at all up there.

The 87 gales hit in October when trees still had leaves so caused more damage.

I was 13 in 87 and stayed awake through it (West Sussex) and that was much worse. Thousands of trees down and power out for days. Whole copses flattened. I love a good bit if tasty weather and there were some spicy moments yesterday but it was nowhere near as bad.

As above top job by the Met Office I do hope they avoid a broad side from the anti experts lobby. Everyone was well prepared and that is fully thanks to them.

Looks less severe, but also benefits from people being forewarned.

I remember being taken home from school and as we left tiles were coming off the roof into the playground.

Same here. A few tiles landed on parents cars waiting to collect us. Other than that I don’t remember much about it.

I thought we were going to be in for it 10 min ago -It snowed and I mean snowed -haven't seen flakes that big for donkeys years - covered shed roof in seconds - Then it stopped - it's still trying but mostly sleet. It's 2.2c so just about cold enough.
We haven't had snow here for a few years.
No sign of any storm damage around here this morning so once again we missed the worst of wind.

yesterday just after i reported how the wind has been worse lost a metal panel from my utility roof 8ft long maybe ,that floated off and smashed a few tiles on neighbours roof then flew over his house ,missing 3 cars by feet.
Neighbours ex is a builder so i got bits and helped him fix it this morning then extra beefy sash screws to bolt my panel back on 40 quid but better than my excess plus my neighbour didn't want to hang around for insurance with the rain coming

Wel I returned next doors fencing to them :p

How we escaped damage I’ll never know. More warnings tomorrow/Monday, although doesn’t look to be quite as bad.

My mum did the same. ‘It’s been ok here’…an hour later…’my garage roof is now on my lawn’. It changed quickly.

it was weird as my metal panel was blown off from the north and went flying south but i guess the wind rushed around the house

Blowing a gale this morning woke me up, the wind speed gusts have been upgraded for later. :(

Don't think I'm getting to Liverpool tommorow.

Very windy this morning, some strong gusts (including some that make the house creak). Friday winds were higher on average/number of gusts.

We are lucky and haven't had any gales this time around but it has been bitterly cold until today plus we have had a few inches of snow. All change today though, 5 degrees C and still climbing and misty drizzle. The rivers are going to be high with all the snow melt.
