Winter 2022/23 - It's too cold :(

It must be hell for anyone who is homeless, especially at this time of year.

It is bone chilling kind of cold when it is cold - not too bad at the moment here though overnight it got pretty chilly.

Last time we had extreme cold a lot of the homeless were camping out in lit doorways, etc... so people would find the body...

I'm guessing there'll be a few deaths.

I'm hoping that was a genuine comment and not sarcasm. I'm sleeping in my van at nights at the moment after a marriage breakdown and it's an absolute nightmare experience. I can't even begin to imagine what kind of suffering destitute rough sleepers must be going through with no shelter.

God bless the YMCA and homeless support networks.

Only about -4C up here over night at the moment.

I know when it's "really" cold ... when I find ice on the inside of the living room windows first thing in the morning
That's big old houses for you.
No double glazing as the house is listed.
I tell a lie.
The planning authority did say once that we could put double glazed windows in. But the only ones they would accept, were several thousand pounds per bay window (and that was a few years back). They had to be hard wood, sash and in keeping with what was already there (mid 1800's).
Put another jumper on I say. Currently got 5 layers on at the moment. Though this is pretty usual for us around this time of year.

It makes you wonder just how our species survived an Ice age and did without hot water, heating or showers for so many thousands of years
I'm guessing a cave with a fire and a family unit around you was much more survivable than a shop doorway with drunks, druggies and police hassling you all night.

I have fingerless gloves as well, but its making the fingers seem cold, just warm's up the hand, also the ones I got despite people claiming they good for big hands, are a tight fit and only only cover about a 3rd of the finger, those in the photo look better with much longer finger cover, where were they from?

This is the problem with buying clothing stuff online.

Was watching some survivalist YT videos last night same thing I imagine, some shelter (a tent) a fire and some food to cook. Not exactly luxury but you can see if you have a group of people and a larger/better shelter/cave its livable.

I can see my breath :(

Heating on tonight me thinks

Might even see a frost tonight! I'll believe it when I see though.

Shorter life spans, less productivity, lower morale, possibly not since they wouldn’t know anything else.

5C in my gym, started at 1C, I actually quite like it :p

It's not as easy today though is it, still need to collect the fire wood, build the shelter, build the tools to build the shelter and cut the wood, find the materials for everything, hunt for food/farm the food and imagine doing it with barely any clothing and stinking because washing isn't a thing lol

I stink and washing is a thing, can only imagine :p

Good watch on BBC 4 tonight at 9pm. Winterwatch1963. The big freeze.
Now that was a winter.

i remember it well.

It was back when people used to shovel snow to the edge of the pavement to clear the paths.

I was a schoolboy of just seven years old, and I was able to travel to school one morning, the whole way (except for crossing roads) on the heaped piles of snow, imagining myself as an intrepid arctic explorer.

When I got to school, there was a notice saying it was closed!

Back I trudge home, being unable to get in, as at that age we weren't given keys to the house, and both my parents were at work.

Me, being a shy little lad, instead of doing the sensible thing and knocking on a neighbour's door, decided to scramble over the wall into the back garden, and spent the next eight hours or so, freezing off my little butt in the garden shed! :p

Now THAT was a proper winter!
