Lovely this, finally proper winter temps, going to be nice to see a hard frost for days on end. From memory when I was young walking to school, we used to get hard frosts for weeks on end during the winter but you very rarely see that prolongned these days. But it looks like the next week or so might actually give us white mornings every day though. Now all we need is some snow down here and I'll be made up.

It used to snow when I was young and it would hang around a week or more as it remained below freezing all day the bus used to slither along but it turned up and the schools stayed open after the initial fall and the roads became passable. Even remember riding my bike in the ruts the car wheels cleared but turning right you had to cross the hump of icy snow in the middle and thats when you came a cropper unless you were really careful. All nothing but a memory now.

Just pour a kettle of boiling water over it, you’ll be golden ;)

Never a good idea IME especially if you've got any little stone chips in the glass.

If I know I have to get up really early the next day before the daylight starts to melt the ice I place a big sheet of Jiffy Foam Wrap across the screen and in through the front doors on either side to hold it in place. It's absolutely brilliant stuff and very robust and totally stops any ice forming on windscreens. In the morning all you have to do is open your doors, roll it up, and stick it in the boot. Try it and I can promise you that you'll thank me later. No need for boiling water, ice scraping, and multiple cans of antifreeze every week.

The extra 100mm of insulation I added to the lofts in the house have definitely helped - the house stays warmer for longer, but the heating still has to come on several times a day - but definitely retaining it longer than last winter. Compared to this time last year we've used about 75% of what we did (got to love smart homes and data!). Whilst we're lucky we can turn the heating on, the investment made into improving the efficiency has had the greatest benefit. I hadn't really appreciated how much 100mm on top of 200mm would have made, but it really does have a significant impact.

Nothing worse than want to get home but to spend 5-8 mins deicing windscreen, side windows and waiting the windows to defog.

Im sure you can find something.

Problem, esp if you park on the road, the water freezes over. A (now retired) colleague slipped on a bit of ice and broke her wrist from someone a few doors down doing this.

The problem is that if you poor boiling water on a frozen bit of glass it will shatter. Best thing to do is pee on it. The minerals and ammonia will get rid of it in seconds.

interesting idea - it doesn't stick, or rip when you remove it ? pictures
I use a small/5l bowl of tepid water, poured over the side/front windows seconds before I start engine, couple of swipes of wipers, and drive off, dump bowl in well.

This cold snap has coincided neatly with us having a new boiler installed today. So, no heating on since the early hours and the front door is open more than it's closed while the engineer is in and out.
Currently working at my PC with two jumpers, hat and fingerless gloves on :D
