Winter 2022/23 - It's too cold :(

Looks like a knife edge setup overnight with the South West probably just dodging heavier snow, but only very small change to the setup would see a fair bit overnight. BBC now erring towards light snow.

Don't know where the BBC is getting these temps, said last night would be just at freezing 0 most of night and drop to -1. It was -5 at teatime and never changed. Tonight it gives us -3 so will probably be more -10 I think, and now even Wednesday and Thursday nights predictions are now for extra cold also now when yesterday they weren't. Fri and sat are slightly warmer though and then above 6 during day till boxing day, so maybe over this extra cold snap on Sunday.

I like it cold but maybe not in the minuses lol when sleeping, last night I woke up and felt like I'd fallen asleep outside and could see my breath in the bedroom.

Sadly a big rise in temperature is on the way this weekend, may even go into double figures :(

Longer range a lot of uncertainty - given the behaviour of the polar vortex and generally disrupted jet I'd hazard though there is consensus for a warm up after the 17th it might not last long.

It's been really cold here the past few days. Earlier today is was still -8, my windscreen washer fluid is slush, rated to -5 too!
Had some snow now, but hoping we don't get much more.

Metro Group have been supplying the BBC forecasts for ~5 years, because they undercut the far more reliable Met Office.

The end of this cold snap cannot come soon enough, it will no doubt depart promptly now I have neoprene socks and some new fluffy slippers on the way! :p

Yeah true, I've held off buying any new winter warming clothes as it was so mild till just a week or so ago, never thought it would dip so far under freezing, hopefully get some socks for Christmas incase Jan is similar, not worth spending much though as its so unusual to get it proper cold these days. Still in a way its been kind of relieving to see it can still get extra cold, I thought after the winters of the last 5 years have been so mild and the heatwaves we'd gone so far into global warming we'd never see many more heavy frosts again in the UK. I certainly don't think the planet isn't still seriously warming up to levels far beyond what they predicted but it gives me a glimmer of hope I guess when it can get this cold still in the UK.

She was lucky Canals aren't that deep, still they're kids, we've all done stupid **** as kids

Googling canal depth didn't quite get the answers I was expecting... some of them definitely have a fair depth to them.

True on the last bit - but certainly not something most would have messed around with when I was a kid back in approx. 80s - maybe it happened a bit more often enough then to be more aware of the dangers.

I was over my local lakes today and I stood on a layer, it was pretty thick today over an inch of ice. I moved about 2 foot away from the spot a bit closer and my leg went through. I was testing how thick it was. It was in the edge and I had a pair of waders on so it would have only got up to my chest area if I fell through as it wasn't deep enough to cause me troubles.

It was MUCH thinner a few days ago! How far were these kids out I don't know BUT I did see foot prints about 5 meters away from the edge where someone else previous to me TRIED to go further. Ice is dangerous. Maybe we need a UK project for signs up in winter, one of the problems is they get vandalised in a lot of areas so it's all up to the kids to make a decision to keep off the lake in these conditions.

Very sad that it comes to death when playing on ice that's thin enough to fall trough but what can you do.

A couple of deaths a year playing on ice and some headlines in news might put them off a little.

Use the met office forecast on their site the BBC one is utter tripe on sunday it said sunshine dry light cloud while the snow was chucking it down... met office one revised its forecast midday and was spot on as usual

Freezing cold water will get you into hypothermia in a matter of minutes.

I remember an old film where a fomer u-boat commander said they didn't bother with lifejackets on the arctic convoys you'd be dead within 20 minutes of hitting the water
