How is it 14C today. I mean I’m not complaining, it’s getting us all through a difficult winter. Long may it continue. Saves deicing the car too.

What's ssw?

Short reply when warm air displaces the cold air over the arctic - that cold air then affects the weather in some other part of the globe - usually Canada/North America or parts of Asia (not quite accurate but the actual mechanics are kind of complicated).

There will be another cold snap, then a nice bright short spring, then a cold and wet start to summer.

It's been the same for a few years. Really ****s up my tomatoes. My greenhouse is on the back of house around the patio doors and the back of the house faces west. It's a proper suntrap in the summer but really struggles in the spring. Even with seedlings it's pot luck if I get a decent harvest and it's all about April and June. They've been **** for some years.

No surprise the bees are suffering apart from the pesticides. They wake up and a month later it's blowing a gale, **** wet, dark and 10c.

if it's not snowing or so much cold/frost/moisture?? combo you actually need to make an effort to scrape the car windows then it's fine for me...all good so far, even that spell of ~-6 before xmas wasn't too bad for how cold it was, somehow

Its was a cold spring last year and there have been a few recently. Tomatoes are usually ok if a bit late if anything the blazing heat is an issue despite what people think they're not tropical plants and the other is water it sucks it right out them. Outside however getting runner beans to grow has been very hit or miss its either too cold (and they really need warmth) or its been too dry (they really don't like drying out) there was a window of maybe 6 weeks where they were any good. Any kind of veg is really difficult for the same reason about the only thing that did any good was lettuce but only by constant watering

Haven't felt the high winds forecast but I guess we get some shelter from southerlys, got my changing robe on as it's just chucked it down but can see some blue edit yep some sun

Weather Underground site reckons we might have sleet or snow around Southampton next Tuesday morning (17th Jan), "feeling like" sub zero. :(

Looks like we'll just get brushed by an otherwise quite potent cold outflow, likewise jet is just marginally pushed away and 850s almost down to -10C but not quite - so likely will be somewhat wintery but just missing something a bit more notable.

EDIT: Interestingly the ECMWF is predicting a fair snow covering for the west, south west and south coast for around the 17th and there is quite some polar disturbances on the model runs - almost certainly going to see some extreme weather for someone somewhere off that.
