Winter 2024/25 - Cold or Mild? Rain or Snow?

Was amazed to see snow actually settled here yesterday evening but it gone with the constant rain by midnight. Went outside in just my t-shirt earlier, not unusual even below freezing but I usually don't hang about, and it is so mild it could have been the start of spring.

Apparently main roads near me are okay issue is cannot get off the street.

Tiny slope but car just spins and slides so sacked the idea off

You don't know cold. None of you do. The horses died first. Didn't have enough to feed them, to keep them warm. Eating the horses was easy... but later, when we started to fall... that wasn't easy.

My favourite was always Helvellyn and Striding edge I have some amazing photos of my time up there in the snow.

Winter was always the best time to go walking in the Lakes or Snowdonia. Start in the dark, finish in the dark with a pint and fish and chips to follow. Snow and ice made it far more interesting especially the ridges, going up striding Edge and coming down swirral was fun in the snow.

It's really cold here right now and we have still got a few inches of snow left which has now gone "crusty" because of the cold. Down to -6.9 degrees C last night and it's still -6 degrees C now and starting to get colder again. I went shopping in Elgin (17 miles North of us) this morning and there is bugger all snow in there and much "warmer" at -3 degrees C. On the way back I took note of the temperatures and until Rothes Glen (around 7-8 miles out from Elgin) the temp dropped to -5 Degrees C but it's always cold and prone to patches of ice there in Winter. It remained at that temp until Craigellachie (2 miles from Aberlour) where it dropped to -6 degrees C. We are supposed to get a shed load of fresh snow tomorrow night and then from Wednesday it's supposed to get even colder with a Northerly wind thrown in for good measure. Brrrrrrrrrr!!

It could be worse though, much worse. Anybody see the programs on ch4 (I think it was) about the severe Winters in the UK in the 60's and the early 1980's? Now that was reall cold and snow. I remember the early 80's one as school was out and we had snow up to out knees In the far depths of Cornwall which is extremely rare. There's this hill that runs from the village of Madron down to Heamoor (must be over a mile long) that was impossible for a vehicle of any kind to even attempt. In fact there were hardly any vehicles on the move anywhere at the time. We all know this hill simply as "Madron Hill" and somebody had the bright idea of racing down it on a couple of doors that someone found. There were 6 or 7 of us on each door and the two of us at the rear had a piece of wood each for "steering" although it didn't make that much difference. It started off as great fun with much banter between the two teams then we got to the bit where it got steeper and boy, did we really pick up speed!! It was terrifying but exciting at the same time and eventually the hill flattens out a lot towards the end. What nobody thought of was how do we stop? Luckily towards the bottom the road bends to the right and the left hand side had the pavement and a grass bank then the stone hedge. The snow was deep and firm enough for us to clear the pavement and the door evenyually dug into the grass bank throwing us all off. We were all shaking and nervously laughing but still went back up to do it again a couple more times. You couldn't do that these days without someone complaining.

Does anybody know how to do or even if it's possible to do the little degree symbol after the number rather than having to write degree all the time?

Now the schools starting the whole delayed starts or closing.

Sons already banking on a snow day to which I said yeah well I’ll still be working so you won’t be going no where ha

Congrats to everyone who has had a nice dose of snow and been able to enjoy it. I think between the amber warning and the mother in law really wanting a snow day from the little one we all got hyped up with hope we would get one. We would have had a nice time of it being the weekend rather than when we have to travel in the week.

As it was we were only forecast snow for a small period in the middle of a lot of sleet. Even on the weather map that was posted a few days ago our town was an unfortunate clear dot hemmed in in all sides by people forecast to get a lot of snow. We ended up with a very wet day and not enough white stuff to even cover the grass :(

Roads were a bit flooded going to work, not too bad except one place, unpleasant driving home just now but not as bad as I thought - the one place which was badly flooded on the way to work they'd come along and drained and the gutter was littered with bits of people's bumpers and under trays - a fair few people must have hit the flood at speed during the afternoon/evening.

EDIT: Apparently on one of the side roads just off my route someone just turned their car over hitting standing water...
