Excellent stuff, just finished watching it. Loved the atmosphere. More adult than LOTR et al, more gritty too, which is a great thing. Can't wait for next week's episode, may well watch the first again before then.

I was really shocked when the guy came out with "Of course, I'd let the whole army **** you"

I was expecting a lot of olden style speak, then that came out. :p

The ugly criticism is just based on how I imagined them after the books descriptions, not ugly so much as not what I expected them to be.

I think I expected Cersei to be stunning but carry herself with a sort of haughty disdain which cones across strongly in the books but very little on the tv.

Sansa I just didn't find attractive despite her being described so, that of course is purely subjective.

Caetlyn didn't look regal or Cary herself as well as the books describe, she came across as a country bumpkin type of noble which was never said in the books.

Anyway I'm just hyper critical as I always am of book to tv adaptions as I have an image in my head of what I expect. Will keep watching and if IRS half as good as books it will be a good watch.

I have to say I agree, especially about the country bumpkin bit. I like the fact that it's got a grittiness to it, but it is missing a regal feel for some of the characters I felt. Having said that, I really enjoyed it, and am really looking forward to the next episode, seems like a very close adaptation to the books.

Loved the title sequence as well.

The wolf pups were lovely, thought it was good, violence and gore has its place in fantasy adventure and I'm certainly no prude but for me there was nudity for the sake of nudity at times. Also I find that the suspension of belief drops a little when the more civilised characters turn into chubby brown at random intervals.

Good though.

The scene in the whorehouse with Tyrion when they arrive at Winterfell is an addition I think, but I can see why they did it. Some of the nudity was a little gratuitous though imo.

Absolutely, was a great way to introduce Tyrion. I was very pleasantly suprised at how closely they are following the book, even down to keeping a lot of lines of dialogue.

How did people like this show. The acting was diabolical, the cast was atrocious, the props were terrible (as I said to someone else, the dead direwolf looked like someone from props stole their daughters stuffed toy and covered it with tomato ketchup), and what the hell was that dancing scene with Bran. You do not jig along rooftops like a wooden puppet. I nearly rage quited at that point, but tried to give it a bit more time. Alas, it was not given much more, as ALT and F4 were pressed soon after. An awful shame, as A Song of Ice and Fire is one of my favourite books. This show really should have had "Starz" at the beginning, and not "HBO", as it was in no way comparable in standards to any other of their finer stuff, and reminded me of that terrible Canadian rendition of "Ben Hur" in terms of quality. Still. We have another notch in the "We can't seem to make good Fantasy shows" string with this. I am honestly surprised to see so many people enjoying such garbage.

Well everyone has different tastes, judging from this thread it seems that a good 90% of people who have posted have enjoyed it, now of course quantity of positive opinions is not necessarily a measure of quality of program, but it certainly suggests that as far as the masses are concerned the show was enjoyable and at the end of the day thats all that matters. Obviously not everyone will like it, some people will love it, others will like it, others will think its so-so and still others, like yourself, will utterly despise it. Its just different tastes, I think Dexter and Firefly are awesome shows, my mate Matt thinks they are both utter tosh. I think Band of Brothers is an awesome show, the missus thinks its very average. Just different tastes is all. I'm happy to accept any fantasy show, better the ratings are for them the more companies might be inclined to make them and the more choice and examples will be on offer.
