Chelsea transfer news: Blues bid £105m for Enzo Fernandez

Is FFP still even a thing?
Never was really, just look at how many times Man City won FFP cases. It was always a rule that was implemented with so many loopholes in it that there was always a way round it somehow

So how much have Chelsea spent so far this year?

About £450m if they sign Enzo. Christ. That’s ignoring the compensation to Tuchel/Brighton as well.

Clearly it is a thing or Everton would have spent their way out of trouble. You still have to have the money coming in, even from 'dodgy' sources to make the numbers work.

Transfermarkt estimate it at around £430m before Enzo. Based on an average contract length of 6 years and with approx half the spending coming in January, from an amortisation pov (the expense that matters re FFP) even including the £110m(ish) on Fernandez, these signings will cost Chelsea circa £60m on this years accounts.

Ignoring any other sales Chelsea have made this season, if Chelsea shift Connor Gallagher for the reported £40m fee that's being talked about, Chelsea will make a profit on his sale of £40m on this seasons accounts. So when people ask how can Chelsea spend all this and comply with FFP, this is how.

There must be a major drawback to this strategy though or everyone would be doing it

You can only do it if you're consistently producing academy players that you can sell for decent money because every penny you get for them is pure profit.

What Chelsea have done in the past 6 months is obviously a different level to what's gone before but Chelsea have always sold really well, which has enabled them to spend big. Again this recent spending is on another level to before but they're not going to continue to spend at this rate - they're just front loading their spending.

The whole Chelsea takeover is fascinating and possibly gives you a glimpse of what is to come in the future or at least what Boehly sees happening. Although he's the face of the Chelsea ownership, the money is coming from a private equity firm - they're not putting money into Chelsea to just blow on transfers, they're expecting a big return in the future. I think it's clear that Boehly believes another big boom in revenue is coming at the next round of tv rights sales in 2 years and that's why Chelsea are doing so much transfer business now and tying players down to long deals too. History tells us that fees and wages increase broadly inline with increased revenues and if Chelsea have their squad intact and tied down to long deals, they'll be laughing if fees and wages increase by 30-40% in two years. Spending big now may save Chelsea a lot in the future and that's the gamble they're taking.

it's not been terrible considering our realistic target for this season as 7/8th and a good cup run.
