Wolfenstein: The New Order

Looking at Total Biscuits video, iD 5 really is a strange beast when it comes to (the lack) of graphics options. The size of the install is undoubtedly textures, RAGE was the same

I'm not entirely sure what people expect from a shooter though? You hear the whiners roll out the usual stuff, bland / generic / corridor etc. At the heart of it fps games are about killing things, if that mechanic feels satisfying and is challenging then it's job done for me. I don't think the fps genre has particularly evolved for the better, just got easier. The prevalence of "Dad's Army" games has lowered the skill level and increased unnecessary fluff, perks, medals.

Couldn't agree more. Although my favourite genre is fps / rpg, the next best thing for me are fps titles like Quake or Doom. Looks like my kind of game. :)

Really enjoying this so far. Had a black line across the screen a couple of times, about 1.5" thick. But other than that, the game looks good. Only took 40 minutes, from inserting the key to starting the game.

Where do you register the Doom beta key. I bought Wolfenstein from Simplycdkeys, got 2 codes, first one I used is for the game. But the other one, which I assume is for Doom, does not register on steam, says it is not a valid key. I'm I doing something wrong!?

Don't say I never do anything for you. :)

you enter your second code here http://www.wolfenstein.com/en-gb/doom

not long to go, looking forward to this now.

**edit** ah, was a bit late with the info **

As I was watching the video, I remember thinking that years ago if a game like this was released, (fps, reasonable visuals, secrets to find, plenty of weapons...and so on) people would invariably give it the thumbs up. I suppose expectations are higher now, which is understandable I guess.

this type of game will always be about you charging forward, with them in front of you firing back, you'll never get much different, you might get a few puzzles to solve/ complicated plot, but at its core it's still an arcade shooter

even Vegas 2 with it's squad/ cover system/ tactics etc bla bla bla, is still a run and gun shooter....you just stop, think what to do and wait a bit longer that's all.

i think i'll download sunday... wait till the worst of the bugs are fixed

Now and again, I go back to modding old titles like Quake. There are plenty of great, high resolution mods around. :)

Not a great fan of most of those "HD" mods for older games, the lighting and post-processing often doesn't fit the theme the high res textures are often a mixture of ultra high definition images but badly slapped over the geometry just highlighting how low res the geometry is, over the top heavily emboss mapped or haphazard use of detail stages :| (EDIT: Oh and original quake SP is still a great game today - I think enough time has passed that I'd happily pay for a modern remake of the original game in its original form just a tiny bit of polishing up/fleshing out original ideas that couldn't be done properly with the tech at the time).

Slightly back on topic thank **** for FTTC - DLing the 40+GB of Wolfenstein is a little less painful at a flat out 9.25MBytes/s.

Killing things doesn't cut it anymore, just like jumping on mushrooms doesn't cut it anymore. Gaming has evolved and while going back to the roots isn't bad per se, not offering more than that is not a recipe for success. Borderlands offered a huge variety of weapons and enemies, Bioshock has an immersive story, Far Cry has a sandbox style freedom, CoD and BF have the best multiplayer.

Wolfenstein unfortunately looks mediocre.

Yeah, I know what you mean, though overall the mods I've tried for Quake have been worth it. I remember my old 4870X2 creaking under the strain of mods like this a few years ago. :D

I would argue that something done simply and well certainly still cuts it. Look at the excitement generated by the announcement of another Unreal Tournament for example.

Nothing you've listed above (with the exception of the far cry sandbox) has moved gaming forward imo. CoD and Boringfield most definitely do not in any way shape or form have the best multiplayer experience, in fact i'd counter they've put gaming back several years. :)

COD upto and including 4 (and to a small extent MW2) and BF2 definitely pushed new boundaries in MP - can't really say the same for iterations since.

I think the simple formula can still work if done right - quake 1 with a little more fleshing out of the world/story depth but keeping it mostly similiar to the original would still be a game I'd play today.

As above, if a dev made a Quake style game today (a crap load of levels / greater story development - finding diary entries or something along those lines / much more in the way of variety items to be found & so on), I would be on it faster than a rat up a drain pipe. I suppose what I'm asking for is something very similar to Quake, but just more of it.

okay, I'm about 30mins into the game and can honestly say it feels EPIC ! it's a no-nonsense modern, yet very old school, fps and so far I love it.

now if I could only get SweetFX working... hmm...
