Wondering How To Get A Job As A Gaming Scientist? Ask Richard Huddy from AMD!

Does he think that the fast advancements in GPU tech is outstripping the willingness of software developers to move forward instead of trying to milk as much as possible out of each engine and does he think that static console specifications and capabilities retard this growth as well? Also would he welcome the predicted death of the console market and move towards more plug and play upgradable unit's?

Will mantle be applied to backward games - Such as Hitman for example? Were you the person the modled Agent 49 on?

As one of the notoriously difficult things to accurately render due to physics does AMD have any plans to introduce more realistic cloth rendering?

What's the future hold for TrueAudio?
I heard that ps4 has a TrueAudio chip in its APU, when porting a game from ps4 or from pc to PS4 is they very little work to get TrueAudio working on each platform.

TressFX has made its way onto multi platform, will TrueAudio go the same way?

What's it like having the rest of the competition looking up at you?

Do you think the release of dx12, will harm Adoption of Mantle by devs? And with dx12 closing the gap, in terms of advantages that Mantle provides - will this derail efforts, or do you see the open source nature of Mantle to give it the edge for future progression?

Have you seen a trend in consumers migrating towards PC based gaming platforms in recent years? back in the 80's and 90s it was common to have a Spectrum or Commodore or Amstrad, Amiga, Atari ST etc and play games on them, PC gaming was very niche at this time, as consoles become more mainstream it seems the computer gaming industry dropped off, and consoles seemed to take over.

Would you say now with the recent changes to consoles, especially with the latest Gens hardware closely matching PC architecture, that PC gaming is becoming more and more prominent?

One only has to walk into a high street chain like Game, to see the walls and aisles full of Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox games and merchandise, but the PC section is usually the smallest section, however is this because the majority of PC titles are now readily available online as digital purchases and infact are preferred in this method?

Do you think the PC Market is slowly growing larger in this respect?

Did AMD share full access of Mantle code with MS in regards to DX12?

How surprised were you(1 lowest/10 highest) that nvidia didn't implement DisplayPort 1.2A on their 9 series gpu's?

Given that that the performance advantages that Mantle brings is already underwhelming compared to the early hype and the difference will be further eroded by DirectX 12, what are the benefits of a low level API to end users?

You do understand it isn't always max frame rate = better? Mantle delivers a smoother frame rate than dx, Games feel much better

You could have directx running at 60fps and mantle running at 40fps and mantle will still feel better.

Mantle offers low frame latency, much faster than dx

"Lower Latency

Thanks to Mantle, apps with lower framerates still feel faster because the latency is better. The team is also able to add features they weren't sure would be possible for performance reasons such as film quality motion blur and other film-style techniques. The studio also provided a demo showing several battleships in space loaded with turrets, and hundreds of fighter ships shooting lasers at fleets of enemy ships. The rendering was in real time: you could zoom out and view the whole battle while keeping an incredibly fluid framerate."

I think this thread is a sweet idea. Don't turn it into a flame war and ask the questions you would like an answer to. I also didn't think it was an "Ask Shankly" thread :p

Some good and very funny questions guys :)

Another question I have is "Will Mantle work with Free-Sync"?

Is it likely that AMD will produce their own console? (handheld or otherwise) - AMD have the experience in terms of hardware, they have an edge where API is concerned and have the company image. It should be possible and could tackle nVidia's offering.

Now that sounds like an awesome idea. I'd be very interested in an APU based tablet - especially a Windows one as that market isn't as crowded as Android.

Well said, sir.

That reminds me of something i have always wanted to put to AMD.

Richard, i understand its very difficult to get your hardware into the tablet market even if you have good hardware for it.

Instead of trying to get vendors to use your hardware in place of the establishment why not just go around them?

Make your own Tablets, a nice Red back GCN based Tablet with AMD embossed across the back, a Gaming caddy for it to slot into for some gaming on the go.

Sold!

Does FreeSync (or GSync) have any effect on the frametimes of games, or the perceived frametimes in games?
Since Mantle, frametimes seem to have once again become the most important thing ever in gaming so I was wondering how this may be affected in the future.

Nvidia made massive noise with Frame times, at the expense of increasing frame latency(with the outcome of matching Nvidia latency numbers) will AMD improve DX performance at the driver level on existing hardware?

How much of an impact do you expect Freesync to have for AMD gamers and will Freesync require game specific profiles to function or are all titles covered with a single Freesync execution?

When will we see(if ever) a monolithic almost double performance advantage over the previous gen-like days of old 8800gt/5870?

AMD don't need to mess around on crap like that. They have their deal with M$ and Sony so that's the sort of crap Nvidia need to play with to make ends meet.

However I still can't see Shield selling...

Look at Shield 1. No longer for sale.. That lasted a while then.

AMD have their CPUs in plenty of things. No need to take stupid risks on gadgets.
