World Cup 2010 - Final (Sunday 11th July 2010) **spoilers**

this was always going to be a tough match, so yes a 1-0 was what i expected, just didnt know what team would do it. spain dominated and germany counter attacked, as everyone expected.

i expect the same in the final, but i can see some dutch players giving away fouls and getting booked early (some of them are too old to run about for that long and will get frustrated quickly). i expect to see a red card for the dutch team in the final and spain winning 2-0. van persie has been extremely poor and i dont expect him to do much, if the dutch do score it will be from a corner, kuyt always obstructs the keeper or main players which helps either him or his team mates bag a scrappy crap goal, so either spain will win classy or holland will win ugly (their long shots wont work against spain), but either way im rooting for spain 2-0.

ive been fairly spot on with my predictions in finals before. (made £250ish from £40ish on the champions league final).

i would start with llorente and villa up front, midfield of xavi, iniesta, fabregas and busquets.

usual back 4 of capdevilla, pique, puyol and ramos.

reina (never going to happen though, casillas is like david beckham in spain - untouchable)

so i expect to see. torres (who has been ruined by benitez over playing him and using him when injured) instead of llorente, fabregas on the bench for that guy whos name i cant remember (just because he plays in spain and fabregas doesnt) and casillas (spains god) in goal over the team i would pick.

i would also put pedro on as a sub for iniesta at 60 mins from my selection, just to rile up a tired old dutch defence.

spot on as always

Well this brings curtains to a uttlery crap, depressing football season ever. No cl for pool, England played crap and now spain are wc winners, i think im going to be sick.
The sooner we wake up to the significantly higher quality of football played in La Liga vs the Prem the better. Watching an English hoof the ball upfield team vs a top Spanish team is a joke, an embarrassment. What is even more embarrassing is listening to people to to justify it.
Very pleased for Spain they deserved the cup. Maybe next WC we can string 3+ passes together

The sending off was appauling, if you remember the first yellow Heitinga got a yellow, when a freekick wasn't even given. Iniesta dived, alonso kicked it out about 15 seconds later, there was no advantage, the ball had gone miles backwards, no freekick, the disaster that is Webb then went to check on the player then gave Heitinga the yellow, and went on with a dutch throw. Sorry but no freekick, a dive, and a yellow? The second yellow was almost as bad, Iniesta lost the ball, felt a tiny tiny touch on his shoulder, put his arm back to make it look like it had been pulled and went over with zero contact making him go down.

Both teams were an embarassement in quality and diving/cheating/fouling, the ref was a joke, the refs that let both teams get to the final were jokes.

By FAR the best footballing side that played good passing football with great flowing attacks, was Germany, screwed out of their best player for the Spain game.

I really didn't want anyone to win, and was absolutely gutted that Iniesta, the single worst cheat of both squads got the winning goal, thoroughly undeserved on his part. Feel completely let down to be honest.

Thats three top teams who all played truly awful players in defensive midfield, Melo, Bommel, Busquets, who all cheated, deserved more yellows than they got, and all three teams ended up playing packed midfields to try and make up for the lack of quality in those players, and all three teams had massive trouble getting their strikers involved due to the slow and useless play by said players.

Spain weren't half the team of the Euro's, and the cup in general was pretty poor quality, I don't even think Germany were that great, but still played easily the best attacking and defensive football.

Why do you even watch football- all you do is rant about everything that is wrong in your opinion!

Webb did nothing wrong with booking Heitinga- he played advantage and booked him when play stopped. TBF to Webb the game was impossible to ref. If he had sent off 1-2 Dutch players early on he would have been accused of ruining the final and when he didn't do that he has been accused of been too weak- lose, lose.

Both teams were diving?!(tonight or in general?) There was hardly any diving tonight because there was no need! There were A LOT of terrible tackles but very little play acting. It was very hard for Spain to get into there stride as the Dutch were constantly breaking play up by fouling.

As for Fabregas changing the game... the game changed once the Dutch ran out players that could put the boot in and risk getting a yellow which was around 1/2 time!

Stating the obvious here, but the best team won. Spain kept trying to play football and didn't stoop to level that Van Bommel and De Jong were trying to play the game at. In the end it was fitting that Iniesta was the player that made the difference given that he was on the end of the potentially career ending tackles tonight.

I didn't think Cesc changed the game, nor had much impact other then a simple pass for the goal (iirc)

Navas had a fair impact.

Webb, *should* of sent a few off, but didn't as he'd have been destroyed by the media for it, and then is for not sending them off :D

Thought he did quite well to be honest.

Holland, just tried to kick Spain off the pitch.

Torres - carried in every game, utter dross, doing his best to do a Rooney and still won the World Cup. Not bad :p

An intersting stat from FIFA; the fastest speed Torres reached in the entire WC was 23km/h, slower than Gareth Barry.

He's clearly not fit and this hamstring injury might be a blessing in disguise; he needs to take some time off and recover fully.

What I don't get was he didn't look fit from the start so why keep playing him?

Edit, new sig looks ace Baz.

This world cup was enjoyable but I must say that after England could not step it up and play properly the whole thing went downhill.

Ghana disgracefully cheated out of a semi-final thanks to a hand ball (dont care if it was instinct or whatever else bull people are saying), Brazil totally losing it in the second half to holland after dominating the first half (it was like they were paid off to lose), Argentina losing 4-0 to Germany when I was so eager for Maradona's clear passion and Messi to do well, the dire inconsistent referring that we saw for the whole tournament, the dire ball and the synchronized vuvuzelas. And I probably forgot a lot more.

The final was awful. Holland are a disgrace. Japan would have given it a better shot. They just sat in defence for 120 minutes. 2 good chances and thats it.

"Total football" ? More like total ****

LOL a lot of you need to go and get your eyes tested if you couldnt see the difference Fabregas made when he came on...came on a bit too late for my liking...but i and many of my mates all said that when he came on...Spain looked far more dangerous going forward and it wasnt just the sublime pass he gave to Iniesta which resulted in the winning goal...it was his movement forward unlike Alonso who didnt make many runs going forward with or without the ball.

I dont think Webb had a bad game in all honesty...a few decisions he got wrong...worst one was the De Jong assault on Alonso...should have been a red straight away but he didnt give a red card until Heitinga in the 2nd half of ET....it was bound to happen with the way the Dutch kicked lumps out of Spain but all credit to Spain, they just carried on with their game and nicked a goal when it counted to win the WC.

Torres should have never come on...everyone who has watched him has said that he lacks the pace...he just doesnt look fit which is a shame because if he was then Villa and Torres would have shredded teams apart with their goals.

For me the best team Spain won the WC and rightfully so....it would have been a mockery of the WC if the Dutch had won....and i have to agree with Alan Hansen in the studio with his comments about the Dutch...cynical and downright nasty tackling from them.

LOL just LOL...they would have been cheated out of the semi final if the ref didnt give a penalty and sent Suarez off;)....fact is Ghana can only blame themselves...they had a chance to finish it with the penalty that Gyan missed....then had their chances in the penalty shootout to win it yet they completely and utterly flopped there too by missing 2 penalties...

What did you want to happen??..the ref to say Ghana you win automatically?? LOL...the ref stuck by the rules to award the penalty and give a red card to Suarez...END OF.

Geez cant believe some people are still bleating on about that lol.

In the vain hope that he somehow finds some form??...commendable by Del Bosque to stick with him ie put his faith in him but it clearly wasnt working for Torres and i think Torres himself knows that...shame as he was immense in the Euros 08 championship...where Villa was injured and he carried the team more or less.

At least Torres sort of aided for the goal in the final, i'm glad Spain won though, i always support them, Mendieta was my favourite player, so i grew a liking to Spain and i have supported them ever since.

A very good point from a blogger this morning. Why is it that Holland's play, particularly from a few in their side, is condemned by pundits and commentators alike yet when Arsenal play the likes of Stoke, Bolton etc... ;)

I can't really understand how a number of dutch players, and puyol, didn't walk in that game. Not a great contest of football, save a few exciting one-on-ones. As a spectacle it never took off. Disgusting attitude from the Dutch in particular.

christ. How did he not get sent off for this?

Reminds me of the scotland one...what was it...only team unbeaen in the 1974 world cup I think it was

Only team to have won a game and not lost the other two yet still not gone through. It went down to goal difference - if Scotland had managed to beat Zaire by 4 goals or more they'd have gone through and Brazil would have taken their place in going out. Scotland still holds that particular record I believe but no longer can claim to be the only unbeaten team not to go through.

Watching Sky Sports news right now and there are still people protesting against Webb for not giving a free kick just before Spain scored.

Also
17 red cards in SA
28 red cards in Germany

Also, world cup 2014 final will take place on a Tuesday, 4 years tomorrow.

It's funny how biased everyone's media is. The BBC were stoically refusing to criticise Howard Webb in any way whatsoever, saying it was a very difficult game to referee. They'll be back to panning him when he makes the same kind of slip-ups in Premier League games, when they no longer have any interesting in talking him up.

The Dutch were incensed with his overall performance, because a Corner wasn't given, a nothing-incident on Elia where he appeared to be fairly prised from the ball, and because Puyol was not sent-off. This despite the fact that Holland kicked 10 shades out of Spain for 120 mins, despite the fact that Robben followed the Puyol-incident up with the most hilarious dive: attempting to dangle a leg and make contact with Casillas, missing, and falling over theatrically, and despite Webb's leniency in not sending him off for a second bookable, after he played on and kicked the ball into the net whilst offside (would have been harsh to earn a red for that, but is in the rules).

And presumably Spain have no gripes with the referee's performance, because they won, but if they hadn't perhaps they would have wanted De Jong's Cantona-kick on Alonso properly punished or Van Bommel to be shown more than 1 yellow card for what I counted to be around 927 separate yellow-card offences during the 120 minutes.

I really think the world cup final made as strong a case for the inclusion of technology as the England v Germany game and the Mexico v Argentina game. With that much tension, and that much pressure, there was so much going on, to expect three men to be capable of dealing with it all without any errors is just madness...
