First he's being compared to Carrick and now Walcott

By Gerrard's standards he had a poor season but his standards are light years ahead of anything Walcott has or ever will reach. It all boils down to expectations; Gerrard's expected to produce top performances every week so when he doesn't and even if he's had just a reasonable game, he gets stick.

Walcott's rubbish and has been rubbish all season and doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the squad. Maybe if he can perform as well as Gerrard has in his worst seasons then he might stand a chance of getting in the squad for the next Euros. He's shown nothing to suggest he's able to perform even at that level though.

Forget Gerrard's standards, he was just poor this season, he wasn't a stand out player in the worst Liverpool team for years. I'd accept your opinion if in fact he'd had an OK season, but he hasn't ..

You're talking utter nonsense. By anybody standards other than the top few % of players Gerrard had a reasonable season. Even when he's not playing to his best he still influences matches because of his ability and to score 12 goals in a side playing as poorly as we did and while carrying an injury isn't terrible, unless you're as good as he is.

To compare Walcott's season to Gerrard's is beyond laughable and touching on cringeworthy, but not surprising from you.

Gerrard has been appalling when I've seen him for Liverpool for a couple of seasons now, and has done nothing whatsoever in an England shirt for longer than that. He's as ineffectual as Heskey, but at least Heskey looks like he's trying. Scott Parker should be there in his place, at least he would fulfill the role he was told to by the manager and not wonder off or get ideas above his station.

Gerrard, 32 starts, 1 sub, 9 goals, 7 assists. Theo, 12 starts 11 sub, 3 goals, 2 assists. Gerrard had a poor season in terms of goals scored, but still scored at a higher rate and got more assists per minute played than Walcott.

But this is the point, Walcott had "normal" season for him, completely useless, one goal every 370+minutes, 1 assists every 550minutes is horrendous, only matched by the uselessness that is Hleb who couldn't score to save his life. Demilson outscored Walcott for gods sake.

Eduardo roundly though of as truly awful this year, had about the same time as Walcott on the pitch and scored 4 goals and got 6 assists, he's got no confidence and absolutely obliterated his leg, and has had no consistant appearances, Theo's had more backing from the manager and no where near as bad an injury, yet was worse, far far worse.

Also no, Gerrard shouldn't have gone, to shoehorn him in we make Lampard play defensively despite being the single most consistant, ever present and highest scoring attacking midfielder basically in the game today, let alone just for England or in the premier league. But Gerrard despite having a bad season has proven in MULTIPLE SEASONS that he's FAR better than he showed this year, Theo has never shown this, he didn't have a bad year, he had one of his best yet, and he was still woeful. Gerrard shouldn't be taken due to form, but was taken for his history and proven potential, Theo has neither as a reason to take him.

The rumour is that Capello told Walcott to stay out wide and he wouldn't, he was yelled out, tolded specifically to stay out wide and not cut inside and he could not do it. He also had him work with Crouch to help Crouch get finished practice, just him and Crouch, no one else, he couldn't cross the ball to Crouch at all. Then asked to simply pass 25 yards with Johnson, no one else, couldn't pass directly too him, Johnson put it at Walcotts feet every time, Walcott just could not do it and sprayed it everywhere..... and Johnson didn't go, why the heck would Walcott.

He's not a winger, thats fair, I've said for 3 years now, given a run as a striker off Bendtner/RVP/Arshavin he MIGHT be good, he will never, ever, ever make a good winger, there is no chance. He can run around a keeper and makes good runs off a CB's shoulder in behind(largely due to pace), his only talent is getting to a ball in behind before a CB and isn't the best finisher, but you put any striker one on one with a keeper 3 times a game and he'll likely get one.

As for saying no one did anything against Barca except Theo, while having a go at Bendtner, 1 goal, 2 assists, and gave Theo an inch perfect pass for his goal that meant THeo didn't have to dribble around the 5 players inbetween them is the only reason Theo scored. If it wasn't for Bendtner we'd have lost without scoring a single goal in either leg.

EDIT:- Upson has previously been good, defence around him this year was absymal, but remember he used to play left back, is left footed and we don't exactly have a lot of potential cover at left back, which is likely why he was taken over other back up, because of versatility and having a back up left footer for left back. If he hadn't gone, Baines would have gone instead of Dawson, Upson covers back up for two roles and IS actually a good defender.

Gerrard has had a side built around him playing to all of his strengths. He's got a proper world-class forward in front of him, and midfielders around him doing all his dirty work (Mascherano and Kuyt aren't footballers, they're grafters) and now he doesn't have Alonso next to him looks a shadow of the player he did before.

I'm not comparing Walcott to Gerrard, far from it. I think Walcott should have gone instead of SWP, not Gerrard. Doesn't mean Gerrard should be in the team.

They've both had poor seasons, much below that of their ability, deal with it.

Most times I've seen Gerrard this season he's been poor by the league's standards, consistently missing in games and then looking as if he doesn't care at all. Then to cap his season off he gave Chelsea the league title. He's had a shocker

Edit - Also, I'm not comparing Walcott and Gerrard, they're not competing for places. I guess my point has been Gerrard hasn't been a stand-out English player this year, there's been 11 better, he'll still start though, rubbishing Capello's vows he made when he took the job

I'm suprised at the Heskey move. I'm also suprised that he was still swapping the team about in the final friendly.

BUT,

England have won every single game of importance under Capello so far.

So I have faith in him.

You're clearly too busy watching 3rd Division Football it seems. Gerrard had arguably his best ever season the season before last so to say when you saw him he'd been appalling shows you've seen very little or you're letting you hatred for Gerrard/Liverpool cloud your judgement.

Also I'm not sure how well Parker would do playing out on the left and I'd like to know how you're so sure Gerrard doesn't do the job he's asked by the manager. Reading a few articles last night, that was said to be 1 of the reasons why Walcott got left out of the squad.

Exactly. Gerrard's a top class player so when he doesn't put in top class performances he's been 'poor'. Walcott's rubbish and nobody expects anything from him so when he doesn't have a rubbish game you think he's played well.

And yes you did compare Gerrard to Walcott; you tried to suggest that Gerrard had been as poor as Walcott last season in your embarrassing attempts to justify Walcott being included in the squad. He's rubbish, he's played rubbish and doesn't deserve his place in the squad, deal with it! Most other Arsenal fans have :)

edit: I will say that SWP is equally as bad and shouldn't have gone either. Of the 30, I'd have taken Johnson instead; Ashley Young's far better than all of those though.

I don't know where you get the hatred comment for. I'm enjoying Liverpool's free-fall but I don't feel hatred for them. I don't hate Gerrard either, I just wish he was as good as he thinks he is (and the press too).

By Parker going instead I meant as cover for the middle, as Cole should start left and Lennon right.

When SWP plays for England he looks like he truly wants the ball.

For me he's unrivalled in sheer determination and showed great pressure in the previous friendly. I think this is why Capello has taken him.

I also think Gerrard is one of the best midfielders in the world.

So you rate SWP and Gerrard?

Say no more :D

Don't worry, we'll never be as bad as Leeds. We're a big club ;)

Surely you should have been calling for Parker ahead of Carrick then because it seems as if Gerrard will be mainly used either on the left or off of the striker.

I think Carrick can bring something to the side if needed though.

To be honest I think, other than Lampard, Milner should be our most important midfielder in this tourny.

You're talking about Gerrard having a bad season and shouldn't be in the squad (I assume) and you defend Carrick? :o

The same with Cole; he's barely played and on the whole has been pretty poor for Chelsea this season yet you'd pick him too? And yes I'd have taken Cole too, despite his form and lack of games, he's far better than the likes of Walcott, SWP and Johnson.

Carrick hasn't already failed for England on numerous occasions though :)

We know Cole can have a positive impact. More than the other two we just mentioned.

Ashley Young is dog poo, some of the worst England performances I've ever seen when he graced the field those precious few (and last) times

I think if Gerrard finds good form, his linkup play with Rooney is unrivalled in the England team, whether we'll see it is another matter completely. I really don't know why Gerrard's season is being compared with Walcott's. There simply is no comparison to make, despite having a poor season by his standards he is still head and shoulders above most midfielders in the EPL. Walcott can't pass or cross a ball, pretty shocking really. All he does is run and run and run and run. He's in the wrong sport.

I never compared the two as players I just said they've had similarly poor seasons. Gerrard has been far from the best CM/CAM in the country, same as Walcott and RM. Yet one is a starter and the other got dropped. People say we can't take Walcott on past achievements/potential, but we're certainly taking Gerrard in the respect that he CAN do great things, not because he has recently. I do hope Gerrard actually does something this summer and proves it was just a bad season and not the start of a decline

That all said, with the replacement being Carrick, Gerrard can stay regardless of how bad he plays, 'cos it will be better than Carrick. Milner has a shout at Gerrard's spot though possibly, even still, he's not particularly convincing, especially for England
