Rules state you have to take 3.

Also the changed the sqauds from 22 to 23 so it makes no difference anymore.
Fifa's World Cup Regulations (a thrilling read if you have the time) indeed states: "Each association will be required to provide Fifa with a final [squad] list of no more than 23 players (three of whom shall be goalkeepers)." The convention of naming three keepers in a squad goes back to 1934 (the United States had named only one in their squad in 1930). Several teams changed goalkeepers mid-tournament in the early years but you have go all the way to 1974 to find the first substitute goalkeeper, when Mwamba Kazadi of Zaire conceded three goals in the first 20 minutes and was replaced by Tubilandu Dimbi (who went on to concede another six).

The need to use several goalkeepers is rare – in 1990 the 24 teams used a total of 27 keepers, while as recently as 1998 the 32 sides in France used a combined 36. In all, only four teams have ever used three goalkeepers in a single World Cup tournament. That's out of 371 teams to have qualified for the finals – surely time for Fifa to change the rules.

I thought Joe Cole might not have got the nod but he did far better in his 45mins than Walcott did in both games so that's a fair enough call.
Bit gutted for Parker, he had an awesome season and on form he's better than Carrick :/

I'm thinking your a fellow blue or just like Bent and Wickham.

As you said, Bent should have gone last time and this time, top English goalscorer? both times? and gets denied.


Hope Wickham keeps progressing well, and look forward to seeing how he compares at the end of next season to now, and hopefully get us promoted. He looked good in U17's, should have put a couple more millions on him to stop anyone poaching him.

Walcott was lucky to be in the squad for me, i'm harsh on the lad but i'm a gooner and watch pretty much every minute he plays.......he really hasn't developed his weaknesses (which are numerous) any since he was 16. If he can't develop at Arsenal he can't develop period.

Parker should have got in for sure.

I didn't realise it was mandatory, it seems rather excessive but if they expanded the squad size to make room for it can't complain I guess.

I wonder if you could list an outfield player as a third GK and get away with it though? is there a rule stating that a GK must play in goal?

If Capello can teach him to play act properly we could be good for 5 penalties a game every time he falls over in the box. :p
 
Walcott hasn't been great lately but he's one of the few players we have that can beat people.
We have no chance to beat good teams without walcott imo.
 
Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Shaun Wright-Phillips.

WHo in that lot is capable of beating people ? man we aren't even going to beat usa.

My god I'd take walcott over a hundred gareth barrys and carricks

Why on earth would you take Walcott over Barry or Carrick? What buffoonery, they're central midfielders. I don't know if you know what the difference is, but Cole, Lennon, SWP, Milner and to a certain extent Gerrard (because he's failed to play well in the middle far too often and should be deployed left or right or not at all) were Walcott's competition for a place.

Lennon and Milner are perfectly capable of beating a man. SWP can with his pace too, though I would have chosen Walcott over him.

Walcott is a black Darren Huckerby. Pace, pace, pace and not much else. Lennon is a far better player.

I'd rather have Beckham there though, someone that has never had to beat a player.

Gerrard to come on for Lennon or Cole (whoever isn't playing well), Defoe to come on for Crouch. Maybe swap them two around depending on the opposition.

I remember Darren Huckerby as a pretty good goalscorer from midfield. You're doing him a disservice by comparing Walcott to him.

Intl defenders would have laughed at walcotts predictable tap and go approach, you want to see a proper arsenal winger look at clips from Overmars or Titi when he started with us.

Can't believe it I agree with you for once! Maybe different keeper, but saying that we don't really have a good keeper :p
