World first QD-OLED monitor from Dell and Samsung (34 inch Ultrawide 175hz)

What firmware is your C9 on? I'm on 05.25.35, I'm not on the latest firmware. I wonder if using a different HDMI cable would do anything... However, I am using a Zeskit certified HDMI 2.1 cable... And had no issues using that same cable when I had my 3090 so I don't think its the cable... In your AW OSD settings, in input source do you have auto select on? @Grim5 has the same monitor, TV and GPU, I wonder if they have the same issue as well!

I do not have this issue, my aw doesnt randomly wake up and my c9 doesn't lose signal. My aw is on mob103 firmware and the c9 is on the latest firmware but it may be different as I'm not in the UK. The aw has a feature enabled by default to auto switch inputs based on what signals are being sent to it - try disabling that, I have it disabled on mine because my work laptop was randomly making the aw switch to its signal instead of my pc as my work laptop seems to wake up even in sleep every so often and send an image output for a few seconds

OLED G8 review by Monitors Unboxed.

So as it stands the only qd oled with proper working hdr gaming features is the one with an in built Gsync ultimate module. All the Freesync monitors have issues...

AMD needs to up its game here, I'm surprised how they don't get more flack for letting these guys ship Freesync monitors in such a poor state. Maybe it's their market share and they don't feel like they have any sway over these companies

I think he's referring to that HDR just works on Nvidia gsync, and he's not wrong. This is mainly because to get the gsync ultimate certification the monitor needs to pass 300 tests before Nvidia approves it and the tests include hdr performance while using Gsync and VRR.

Last of Us is the first game where I am regularly seeing VRR flicker, it's sometimes distracting but I can ignore it mostly as it only happens in certain scene like where there's dimly shaded areas of foliage like shown below:

If I turn Gsync off in NVCPL then obviously it's gone, but then no Gsync... Can't wait for the day that VRR flicker on OLED is a thing of the past!

The funny thing is in the truly dark areas of the game like at night or in sewers etc, VRR flicker is not there, it's only on these foliage type scenes. Perhaps it's a technical engine issue too amplifying VRR flicker, as not all games have this, Resident Evil 4 Remake was perfectly fine, in fact it seems it is fine when the framerate is consistently high, so above 90fps - This makes sense as I can't use DLSS in Last of us currently due to the crashing issues so am waiting for the patch, then can get back into it with DLSS and have high fps again with no obvious VRR flicker.

VRR flickers only occurs with near black colors present on screen. In r doesn't happen if you have actual black like a dark scene, it happens with near black in dim scenes. I've seen this flicker in many many games, almost every game I've played in the last year had at least one area in the map where it's dark enough to flicker. My eyes are very sensitive to flicker so I easily notice it.

The only way to stop the flicker is to disable VRR or turn up the gamma, turn up brightness, turn up black level so it makes all the dark parts of the screen brighter.

While I'm not 100% sure perhaps the flicker occurs over an entire single frame and then it would make sense that the higher your framerate is, the lower your frametime is and therefore in absolute terms when a flicker occurs it occurs for a lower duration - for example at 60fps maybe the flicker lasts for 16ms and at 120fps it lasts for 8ms and and at 240fps the flicker is on screen for 4ms. Maybe?

The other thing that seems to affect it is a framerate stability, so of the framerate is up and down jumping around then it seems to induce flicker more frequently

It seems both LG and Samsung are super happy with the sales of their OLED monitors and panels and are planning a wide range of new models to fill out the market and many of them pack super impressive specs.

TFT central have leaked Samsung and LG new panels, all of these panels are set to go into production by the end of 2024 so it will be 2 years before you see a monitor for sale with the more extreme panels below and more the milder speced panels you can see them later this year.

First up is a refresh of Samsung currently only QD OLED panel they make. The Alienware and others using the 3440x1440 panel can expect a bump up to 240hz with a new panel refresh coming this year. Samsung is also going to bring out a 2560x1440p 27 inch 240hz option to compete with LG.

For 2024 Samsung is going to bring out some big boy toys: 27inch 1440p with 360hz, 32 inch 4K with 240hz and 27inch 4k with 240hz.

LG is going to bring out new ultra wides at 35, 39 and 45 inches with 240hz refresh rate. In 2024 LG is going to also bring out a 32 inch 4K monitor that can output both 4k 240hz and 1080p 480hz. They also planning a 27inch 4k 240hz and a 27inch 1440p 480hz (most of these are in production at the end of next year). There is also brightness target increase with 2024 panels targeting 1300nits peaks and 275nits at 100% white screen.

What colour setting do we all use on the DWF? Srgb or dci p3? Also do we use the dell monitor profile?

Use whatever you want

But for me I find dcip3 over saturates colors in sdr and it's tiring on my eyes so I also use srgb. Srgb doesn't look too good either though, because the Dell color profile sucks - just delete the file and let windows do its thing and then SRGB looks great. When you engage hdr the monitor wil go into dcip3 and you can't change this and that's fine, dcip3 when in hdr looks great and it doesn't over saturate like it does in sdr

So the profile you can download from dell just don't use it and delete it if you already installed it?

Windows installs it by itself anyway; there is something wrong with it - it makes the color red look like orange in SRGB and as soon as you remove the Dell profile from the windows color settings red looks red instead of orange. You can also run the windows HDR calibration app, this will make windows use your custom color profile in sdr and hdr and windows will stop using the Dell profile and this also fixes the issue with Srgb colors so either option works

Just noticed that my AW3423DW lets me change brightness in the OSD menu when in HDR400 or HDR1000 mode. Also, contrast is grayed out and I cannot change that. I have firmware version M0B202. Using Windows 10. I thought that when the monitor is in HDR mode, that the brightness setting in the OSD is locked and cannot be changed? Is this an issue with my firmware or Windows 10? I also have a 2nd AW3423DW, same firmware, does the same thing. Anyone have any insight on this?

HDR brightness is blocked on my aw but I have an older firmware. Maybe they've listened to complaints and unlocked the brightness on the newest firmware

Nvidia seems to be changing their approach I think because they are allowing user updates to the newest Gsync ultimate monitor, the Asus pg27aqn. As far as I know it's the first and only Gsync ultimate monitor with user updateable firmware

I don't know if this is only possible because this monitor has a new Gsync module that previous monitors don't or maybe Asus is the first company to satisfy Nvidia's control freak nature for Nvidia to be willing to allow over the air firmware updates

This monitor is also the first and only monitor support Nvidias new ULMB2 technology, so I suppose it's possible Nvidia is using a new Gsync chip and on this new one they built in over the air firmware update support

Yes, the text clarity is still an issue. I am really surprised that Microsoft still hasn't done anything about it. It is so easy to fix, if you are a company like Microsoft. There is a solution, by the way, it's called Mactype. How to set it up is documented in the forums here. The only problem with it is that doesn't work with dual monitors, which, unfortunately, I have. That's why we really need Microsoft to get moving and get it sorted!!

MacType is not a real solution
