World first QD-OLED monitor from Dell and Samsung (34 inch Ultrawide 175hz)

I set up mine today

First impressions

* Mine has marks on the screen from the bubble wrap but should come off with a clean

* The anti reflective coating reflects more than I expected but I'm coming from a matte monitor. However it's not an issue when the monitor is on and showing light color images; only when show pure black across the whole screen do I start to notice reflections.

* While blacks have some purple tint to them when the room is bright, it's still a million times more black than the edge lit IPS it's replacing which was incapable of making black under any circumstances.

* the HDR400/1000 modes are a bit finicky; sometimes in 400 mode white webpages look brighter than switching to 1000 where the ABL dims it to under 400 but when watching HDR videos/content the 1000 is much brighter and vibrant.

* As I expected, despite some reviewers saying it's a dim monitor in SDR at 250nits full screen brightness, it's far more than I need and I ended up lowering the max brightness in SDR to 130nits.

* The blue light filter seems to be more aggressive than my old monitor so my windows night light settings for night time working need to be changed.

* The text is a little bit less sharp than my old monitor, but I quickly got used to it and it's perfectly serviceable even for working.

* Mine has what I belive to be the latest firmware installed, MOB102 even though the box says manufactured in April 2022.

* I like the stand, and was easy to install the panel. The RGB lighting is meh, I like the idea but the lights are nowhere near bright enough to be able to use them for bias lighting - I may get some RGB strips for the back of the screen.

* Overall it's pretty good monitor so far. If I have to nitpick I'd say text clarity could be better and the anti reflective coating could be better but other than that the images it produces is amazing and the colors definitely pop a bit more than my C9 OLED TV, this is especially noticeable on certain colors (red, orange, yellow and gold). A couple times while testing I thought HDR was on when it was actually off just because of how much the Orange UI elements in Windows now pops.

* Regarding fan noise; what noise? If I didn't read from reviews that the monitor has two fans I would not have known, I can't hear any noise from the back of the monitor and the monitor also doesn't seem to give off much heat.

Is there a list of recommended settings?

Only configuration I've set is using Better ClearType already but it doesn't seem to actually make text look any better. Text is less legible than an IPS screen but it's serviceable

Creator preset, srgb, gamma 2.4 and hdr1000 will be the most accurate modes as always for this set. Anything beyond that is subjective.

Cheers. Being playing around with settings.

The monitor really over saturates colors in dcip3 mode, looks better in srgb but I think I prefer gamma 2.2 but I think I found an issue where the monitor goes back into dcip3 mode if you switch in and out from hdr and turning monitor on and off

P3 is HDR color space so that's why it'd look over saturated in SDR. That's how P3 is suppose to look when color volume on the set is good.

It should only switch color spaces when HDR is triggered like using win+alt+B. Weird bug. Don't think I've seen or heard that before so might be new? Also make sure you have no icc profiles that windows tried to install under color management.

How do I get rid of ICC profiles?

Remove any from here. Should look blank like mine. Check on occasion if something feels off. Windows tries to 'help' There's no reason for any of the Dell/AW software either btw. Just more RGB spam/junk

Cool thanks, I've removed it. I didn't notice any difference in SRGB mode afterwards though

edit: oh it requires restarting the app/program in use. Oh wow it actually make a big difference, SRGB doesn't look dull and red doesn't look orange anymore and gamma 2.4 looks better than 2.2 now.

Can confirm mine also has my desktop icons burnt in on certain darker grey shades, along with my HUD from Warzone.

When not using HDR, my brightness was set to 15 and contrast at it's default value. Mine has been used for around 5-6 hours a day on average.

Sounds like dell is going to regret offering burn in warranty

How many hours have you put into Warzone on the screen if you don't mind my asking and was that with HDR on?

Just curious because CoD WWII was actually one of the tests Rtings used on their burn-in test the other year because they considered it a fairly low risk game for burn in. They didn't get much burn in at all even after 10k hours. I'm not big on CoD but I don't imagine the UI will have changed massively? That said I think they didn't test with HDR on.

You're right it's definitely concerning because burn in tests on LG OLED TVs suggested that game was unlikely to cause problems so to see burn in from that game after a couple months and on QD-OLED is alarming. And then there is mrk who managed to burn in sdr desktop icons which can't exceed 250nits peak. I wonder if it's a design flaw, a combination of brightness too high and pixel/panel overheating due to inadequate cooling

Out of interest, those of you who have burn in, how hot has your room been this summer, do you have air conditioning?

Well, I'm not saying having a hot room is what's caused burn in but I was curious to see if anyone who had a nice cool room had any problem to rule out summer heat. Heat theoretically is a problem for OLED but we just don't have data to show how much impact has - everyone who's done burn in testing, like rtings has done it controlled commercial buildings so we don't know if higher air temperature in real world use makes burn in worse or not.

What we have previously seen is that OLED models which had heat sinks clears up retention problems quicker and is more resilient to developing in the first place.

You can see near black steps with 2.4? 2.4/BT.1886 is only for a pitch black room. Even in a dimly lit room with a small lamp most don't go above 2.3 as it crushes the blacks because of the light environment. Your pupils close with more light.

I'll check soon, but what I was trying to do is trying to get the image to look close to my iPhone 13 pro. From what I can see on technical reviews this phone screen is extremely accurate and tried to match its image - what I found is that 2.2 is slightly lighter than the iPhone and 2.4 is slightly darker so I ended up choosing 2.4 instead but I may switch it around depending on content.

As for the black steps, i checked this using the iPhone and found that even in a pitch black room I can't see 1 to 3 and only barely see 4

Some peep on the bay is selling these already, it looks like he has a pallet load of them wth is going on ?

At this stage I'd guess its a scalper. Dell didn't put order limits on the monitor even though supplies couldn't meet demand, so the scalper probably decided to order a bunch and see if he can make a few bucks by re-selling them

This new monitor is interesting.

It's what I believe is a reworked LG woled panel that supports 4k 138hz. The part I find interesting is that it's very thick in the back with large vents, Asus says they added the large heat sinks in to prevent burn in, it's also heavy weighing 50% heavier than a 42 inch LG C2

So if Asus believes heat sinks prevents/mitigates burn in, why doesn't the aw34 have a heatsink - early review by hdtvtest already showed that a hdr 10% white window causing temp image retention shadowing on QD-OLED

Asus have also decided to take a pot shot at QD-OLED by saying their text is clearer and doesn't have color fringing

So the message that pops up for a refresh after 4 hours of use Is highly annoying. How do I disable the message but still have the monitor do the refresh when the monitor is next in standby mode? There is an option on the pop up message to disable the message but I'm worried it also disabled the refresh process?

I received the monitor today, I ordered it in May and the initial delivery date was in Oct. but I received an email from Dell order was ready sooner and ready to be delivered. This was at the beginning of August and because I was on holiday I had to ask UPS to delay the delivery by 2 weeks

The first impression – the box was a bit tattered and damaged but I suspect because it stayed 2 weeks in the UPS Wearhouse. Anyway, the packaging is strong enough and no apparent damage translated to the components.

Secondly, here is where I am not sure, the monitor may have been used and not brand new. The wrapping around the power cable and some of the support seemed as if someone had opened it previously, but it does not bother me too much as long as the screen is perfect this is what is important

On my old LG34GK950F, there is a way to see how many hours the screen had been used in the menu, Dell does not seem to have this option, checked the firmware and indeed the latest one M0B102 is installed so .. not sure

The screen itself seems to be perfect – no scratches, no marks of use etc- no dead pixels and I was not able to see any problems with it during Eizo monitor tests

Thirdly – my biggest issue – is looking side by side with this monitor and my old LG34GK905F I do not think the improvement in image quality is worth the 1.2 k price.

Yes Oled blacks and contrast and HDR are nice but the brightness is lower on Alienware and the colours seem not to pop up as much as on IPS. I did try the standard profile and also the TFT central recommended settings and to be honest, I am underwhelmed, I expected better

Is it me or is there a problem with this particular panel? I would put a picture but am not sure how to attach it, do we still have to faff around Imgur or did the new forum make this easier?

Post a picture side by side so we can see what you mean by colors not popping. Mine pops way more than other OLEDs I have and all my OLEDs pop way more than VA and IPS I have

Entirely unsurprised considering how much they seem to love adding a curve to everything, even when it doesn't seem needed. At least for ultrawides I can kind of see it, but I still don't get why they bother with their 16:9 screens.

Samsung's larger VA panels look awful when flat. I think they still make some flat 24 inch but everything larger is curved

P3 is HDR color space so that's why it'd look over saturated in SDR. That's how P3 is suppose to look when color volume on the set is good.

I've narrowed down the problem.

So what's happening is when the monitor comes out of standby it automatically changes the color profile to DCI P3 on all the HDMI ports. This only happens when I connect via HDMI, DisplayPort will stay in SRGB coming out of standby

Extremely annoying.

What will Dell do if I complain?

They used to have it on their TVs too. I knew someone who had one. Was awful because you had to sit a specific spot in the living room else the colours looked kind of washed out. I'm not sure who at Samsung thought that was a good idea for a device that's generally used by a number of people all sat in different spots, lol.

I think their TVs have a different coating now though, their newest coatings are quite good at improving viewing angle in VA but that coating also lowers maximum brightness and brightness is already quite low on the Samsung monitors
