Would you SLAP your child..?

At the moment the worst students in my area get pulled out of classes and put into a seperate project where they get outings, guitar lessons, speedboat rides etc.

That's a damn good idea actually and stops them disrupting the harder working students. The students that work hard should be rewarded more aswell but also, the trouble makers should be given more long term alternatives to classes such as maybe more practical lessons, etc.

This causes a huge row in the community as they are seen as being rewarded for bad behaviour. Behaviour IS worse today that it used to be im afraid and while i dont necessarily agree with the reintroduction of physical punishment it clear something should be done and i definitely feel there is a lack of parental responsibility in many cases.

Well I'm glad that bad behaviour is supposedly worse (according to you) than children living under fear of authority and authority having too much power.

Something should be done in dealing with the social issues at schools. People should stop ceaselessly blaming parents as you can't control what parents do at the end of the day. All you can do is make school better and more responsible.

The trouble makers should not get to go out on fantastic outings - everyone should be treat fairly simple as. How crazy is that? That because kids disrupt lessons - they get taken OUT of the classroom to go and have fun? Whilst the kids that work hard get to stay in the classroom and do lots of work?

You swore at a teacher - you get punished, it happens. Same as if you swore at your boss at work and he didn't like it. Just because you've never done it before doesn't mean you can just be let off.

It sets a VERY bad example to the rest of the class if you swore at a teacher and he let you off.

I've done things and been told off for them - and later the teacher has apologised to me, because they felt it was necessary as they have to keep an image up for the class. Fact is, that wouldn't need to have happened years ago.

I dont understand what you're trying to get at. Are you saying that if corporal punishment came back - innocent kids would get punished? How so?

I didn't get "let off", I explained myself and wasn't 'punished'.

Innocent kids did get hit if they were being beaten (hit over the hands with a ruler or something) for small incidental things like talking in class too much. There was still bullying back in the 50's or whenever and I doubt very much caning did anything to prevent that.

Yes. Because they are obviously not enjoying the class and are disrupting everyone else.

I wish certain people had been pulled out of my classes when I went to school. That would have made things so much easier.

Do you think it's so wrong to hit your kids nowadays? If they have have been naughty?

I'm not talking about beating them for no reason.

If your child is scared of you... or is scared that he / she would be in BIG trouble if they done something bad / naughty - Is that such a bad thing?

i think if the child misbehaves, is asked to stop misbehaving but continues and then is given a final warning (the penalty being a smacked bum) then yes, completely, the reason this country is as ****** up as it is is because of a lack of discipline by parents, i soon learned to stop doing what i was doing when my parents disciplined me, i'd probably be like some of the arse holes that roam my estate beating people up, torching cars and doing drugs if it wasn't for a strict up bringing where rules were rules and there were punishments for naughty behavior.

having said that i probably wouldn't smack a kid (again, on the bottom) if s/he were younger than 3 (learning from my brother they tend to grasp rights and wrongs and consequences from about that age).

So if its not the parents fault and its not the schools fault just exactly who is to blame?

Authority should have power. Thats why its authority. The problem is the balance of power lies more with the pupil than the teacher. The fact is you shouldnt treat children like adults unless they behave like adults as they actually arent adults yet. If you swear at a teacher you should be punished but the problem is if a pupil was worried about the punishment he would be muss less likely to do it in the first place.

In a similar way kids who go off the rails a bit know that they will not be seriously punished by the police so there is no deterant to avoid bad behaviour.

Pulled out of classes fair enough - but not pulled out of classes to go on days out. I wish people would have been pulled out of my classes too. It makes things easier for the students but not necessarily for the teachers.

So what if they aren't enjoying the class? a lot of students don't enjoy school but they get on with it anyway.

Yes Most being the key word.

I hated school with a passion and wouldn't have been saddened to see it burnt to the ground while I was there. I hated it, I hated the majority of the students, I hated most of the teachers, I hated how it was run, how boring it was, how I had to attend, everything basically.

Having some annoying idiot in the class with me helped matters no end. Who cares if they were taking guitar lessons or whatever?

The problem is both points of view are actually correct.

It IS better to take the kids out of the class as it stops them disrupting the other kids.

They are engaged in other activites to try and encourage interest and put them on the straight and narrow.

It cost the local authority an absolute fortune if any of these kids end up being sent to a young offenders home etc so if all the money being spent on them actually does keep them out of trouble even for a while, the local authority is better off.

Of course your point of view is equally correct and is the one most people share.

Again a no-win situation

I'm exactly the same with a few differences being that I looked forward to a couple of lessons - mainly because of the banter with the teacher.

I care if they are out taking guitar lessons instead of doing their maths exam because their taking the easy way out then at lunchtime they'll go around making peoples lives a misery again until its time for their super fun happy day out.

Best days of your life.

You should have embraced it!:p

School is incredibly easy compared to real adult life.

They should be taken out - its fine if they do the work elsewhere. But as you say, it sickens me to know the government have to spend money and resources on crap like this because they cant see any other alternative. People who cause misery and frustration in our world shouldn't get the easy way out - and they shouldn't have the right to take more of the governments money.

Its not the easy way out as they'll have no grades.

However, I wish I'd have failed everything at school to be honest and taken it much less seriously and took some drugs or something.

School ruined my life over some poxy letters written on some pieces of paper. Great. It was all a waste of time and counter-productive.

Just what happens in jail.

Face it.

Nah, I can see how it was for a lot of people but for me it was awful.

That's compounded by the fact that life got worse after leaving school which makes me even more bitter about it.

I didn't take school seriously

I found guitar at the age of 14:p

I grew up, got my degree at 24 and moved on.

School is what you make it.

I dont need to anymore - my school days are over. So no :)

I see it as an easy way out as they dont care if they dont have grades - they slog their way through life mooching off everyone else, and their totally fine with it.

I agree looking back on it now some of it was totally pointless - but a lot of it I felt was very valuable, and the good experiences outweigh the bad for me (but only just).
