WWDC 2006

Aww... no "THERE'S ONE MORE THING"... :(

Well, at least we know now that the Mac Pro can rival a decent gaming system with it's x1900xt GPU and Core 2 Duo... and no "iPhone" - yet.

Edit: opps.

I was expecting a lot more from this years keynote.

£1699 for the dual 2.6/1gb ram MacPro

-£200 for dual 2.0's

-£60 to drop from 250gb > 160gb

Then again, it's not like we are ever going to get anything 'cheap' from apple.

Very disappointing :(

No suprises, no new info.

No new info? .... The whole point of the WWDC keynote was to preview leopard, and that is exactly what we got, as well as the Mac Pro :)

How is it overpriced? It isn't a standard desktop PC... it's meant to be a workstation.

It's cheaper than an equivalent Dell.

Can you spec an otherwise identical or superior Windows machine for cheaper than that?

£1700 doesn't seem bad at all for what you get given the market it's aimed at.

I don't think workstations from Boxx (or others) cost so little based on dual Opterons.

hmmm!

I am not sure between the dual 2.66 Dual core with 1GB RAM

OR

dual 2.00 dual core with 2GB RAM

gah!

i'm thinking more the latter.

Nothing much of interest to me there. I didn't expect consumer level things (iPod, iPhone etc.) as I think they'll come later, but the leopard preview was rather uneventful.

Shame :(

Do apple genrally announce new hardware during the week of WWDC or would it have been annaounced at the keynote?

So because its cheaper than the Dell that makes it right?
Is Dell now the benchmark we should be using to decide wether something is expensive or not? :o

For that price i'd want at least 300Gb, if not 500Gb of HDD space, and at least 2Gb of ram. Not to mention a gfx card with a bit more power than a 7300!

How much would a dual socket motherboard and a couple of 2 way Opterons set you back of similar performance? £1000? £1200? That's assuming that 2x Opteron can even keep with the new Mac.

Mind you I didn't realise that the 7300GT was only a £50 part. Yikes ! That makes it useless to me. I wish Apple would allow PC Nvidia cards and not force you into the narrow selection they offer.

1 GB is not enough for me. Minimum of 2GB please.

Still don't think it's overpriced though.

Remember your getting a superbly designed case (the SATA caddys are a fantastic feature), the ability to run the entire Apple range of pro software, top notch support, ECC RAM (and up to 16GB at that!) among other things... Pre-built workstations ALWAYS cost a lot more than cobbling something together yourself off OCUK's store.

Just maxed out the 'configure your own' page... £11,367 for the top end model with 2TB of disk space and 16GB of RAM and the Quadro graphics with two 30" cinema displays. Absolutely insane amount of money to spend on a computer!

Gotta love the desperate justifications and fascinations of things that have been done before with all things Apple. :p

Suprisingly, that works out cheaper than a maxed G5, iirc, that came to £16k!

I've never owned a Mac so I don't have any axe to grind or justify anything. The thing is that even if you wanted to knock something similar up yourself you would end up spending the same amount.

I'm curious to know why you think Apple are fleecing anyone this time.

With the G5 and earlier generations then yes I was very suspicious of Apple and their benchmarks (vs Windows) but now there is a level playing field. The fact that I could also have a quad core PC via Bootcamp to run my 3D apps that still aren't on OSX make this an interesting option.

£1700 is still a lot of money and when push comes to shove I will probably stick with Wintel and get a Conroe system but it doesn't mean the MacPro is a big rip off.
