Dukes freighters, repair lasers, marines, capping ... I really have just scratched the surface with this game lol.

Same here I have had the game ages and really need to put some time into it, One of my missions has stopped and can't continue cos I sodded off somewhere and can't find the ship I was supposed to scan
but I have some money and ships so don't want to start again

Personally i just go in guns blazzzing and wipe them out, not that hard if you have some combat skills. If you are lucky you can even force some to bail.
The xenon L's in the sector you start following the nova will bail easily a few hits into the hull and they will normally go blue claim those abandoned ships and make some easy proffits.
Yup its big there are mods out there that make it even bigger. Get you self a jump drive ASAP will make travel around the universe much easier

Which mission might be able to help.
Me again. How do I get the rapiers - which I got for free - to dock at a station. I have chosen the command for them to follow me to Saturn sector then just before we reach the shipyard I order them to dock in it. Now I thought they would just fly straight up and dock but oh no, they actually turn around and fly away from it, all the way out to the edge of the map, like it's bugged or something . What could I be doing wrong 
I've tried waiting outside the shipyard and ordering them to dock, I've also tried it when I was docked then ordering, but both ways end up with the same result.

They should dock if ordered have you tried them one at a time?

Edit: Well that worked but the ship didn't dock at the same place I do. I thought it was flying away again but then it disappeared from the sector map and when I checked it had infact docked ... very strange AI. I've forgot why I wanted to do this now hahaha

I must remember to get salvage insurance
Insurance is a bit pricey early on in the game at 3000 credits ... I just make sure to dock before leaving a sector to try and keep as much money as I can.
Most of the side missions I've looked at have either been "very hard" or my ship wasn't equipped for he job, slightly disappointed with that.

Terran stations are so huge they play merry havoc with autopilot its far far faster to order ships to dock if you do it from a different sector also get a docking computer for yours asap and you can insta-dock with any station at the touch of a button if your within 5km.
I'll keep an eye out for the docking computer. Got any tips or hints for making money which don't involve fighting, simply because the last time I tried it I got hit 3-4 times and I was destroyed.
I have a guide here which talks about buying up energy cells from a solar power plant. But these give ridiculously small profit, buy for 14 sell for 16 ... my M4 can only hold about 60 of them
Then I tried water which was a little better buying at 36 selling for 53 but again I can't hold a lot.
Is this just they way I have to go on until I can get the AI to do it for me, then buy a freighter with lots of cargo space and continue ?. Sorry for all the questions it's just that these guides are a little thin on information.

Go and download X3TC For Dummies will help you out massively.
I am trading in Meatsteak Cahoonas just because you can have quite a big profit margin on them if you can find the right places if you are just starting out till you get a bit of money behind you for a better ship.

As for the meatsteak I think I saw a place in Circle of Labour which has some, I think. How much profit do you make with that ?. I'm heading down there now.

Home of light ... that's waaaaaaay over the other side of the universe for me lol I've found a cahoona bakery ( brilliant name) in a sector close to me which sells them for 43 so hopefully I can see a good return on them. I also want to learn how to get that other ship I have up and running as a small trading ship, even though it's a M5 but at least it's a start.
