X4 Foundations

I'm hoping the Split DLC adds more to the game. The main quest is over in an hour!! I know the big wider world exists to go and explore, but I'm at 500+ ships, I have very big self sufficient stations with every module & fab bays (although not as pretty as yours...!), and the slight menu lag is frustrating. First person view though still works well.

We're thrilled to kick off the beta for our big 3.0 update of X4: Foundations! While we recently informed you about the delay of the 3.0 public release, we're now ready to have interested beta testers check out some of the main changes this big update will bring to X4: Foundations in the first quarter of 2020. These include:
  • Improved graphics engine to support new visual effects
  • Better sound effects
  • Virtual seminars and quicker skill progression for crew training
  • Configurable alert system
  • Individual and group crew transfer
  • Policing options for player-owned space
  • Ability to dock using a spacesuit directly
  • Improvements to menus including Map, Encyclopedia, Logical Station Overview and Logbook
  • Improved target display and mission guidance
  • More control over drones and turrets
  • Alternative steering methods including head tracking systems and X3 retro mode

How is this game? Played first one very long time ago, thought it good (grew up with elite) but vexed that your traders would get killed without you knowing

The game is great. Ofc you will lose traders if you haven't gear them up, or you haven't set escorts. However you can always limit the systems, given them an action what to do when meet pirates, and let you know whats going on. And you have to gear up your escorts, better spend 200K credit extra than lose a whole trader.

Again, depends the system, pirates etc, yuo have to plan ahead. Like you can sacrifice cargo capacity by not getting a Teladian haulier but an Argon but latter comes with 2 guns. Also never ignore to equip your traders with employables likes laser towers & drones, and those who can take a S class ship, have one docked on them for emergencies.
 
Having just watched the stream I should really play this game again considering I have not touched it since the first month or so of release and I had to buy it this time around.

It's looking a lot better then the last time I fired it up.

Still wishing for better modding support :(

You do not need mods :) Just play it without and join also the Online Ventures which cannot be played with mods.

I'm a modder at heart when it comes to these games. Played very little of x3/tc or AP, just modded them to hell and back. Involved in some of the large x3 ones (reskinned every X2 ship/ engine effects / transcend etc) plus had stuff in AP. So I was really looking forward to having a less limited engine when it came to XR and X4 but no real Model importing tools or docs stopped that :(

Be interesting to see what tools they are going to release.

But you are right I should just play one of their games at some point.
