I hope this is still working, my Ultimate runs out in about a month and I was hoping to stack the gold and convert so I don't have to worry for the next three years.

Same here, hopefully still working. To be honest I hardly play Game pass games unless there is an exclusive I like. But still feel the need to have it, just in case...
Just did this using CD Keys: Turkey Xbox Live 12 month codes (£24.99) x 3 (you have to search for them otherwise it'll just give you the UK codes- more expensive)
Used HolaVPN on chrome to switch to Turkey and redeemed via https://redeem.microsoft.com/
Then upgraded to Game Pass Ultimate for £10.99 (no longer offers you the £1 upgrade), works out approximately £2.39/ month in total

Forgive the noob question please... Do you still have to use a vpn when playing the games? Or does it not matter which country you are in once the subscription has been paid?

No, you only need a VPN for adding the Gold codes to your Xbox account.
I did these via my PC and used Norton as my antivirus comes with a VPN and saved having to install browser plug in or anything which I wouldn't trust.
Once the codes were registered I went onto my Xbox as usual and selected the option to upgrade to Game Pass and was charged 10.99 and that was it.
No you have to wait until it has expired.
If you try and add Gold codes while you still have an active Game Pass sub they convert the Gold to Game Pass which I think is 12 months Gold = 4 months ultimate or something pretty low. Definitely wait.
Can i cancel it now if its expiring december and renew if for 3 years from now?

I don't think so, I'm no expert but everything I've seen posted/discussed says you need your sub to expire before renewing.
You've already paid up until December so I'm not sure what you would be cancelling? You can turn off auto renewal but you would still have the last 6 months of the sub on your account to run down. You could reach out to MS support and see if they could end it early.
Yep, you can buy gold for the UK which is £35.99 per year on cd keys and then do the upgrade which will convert it to ultimate.
MS don't care it seems, I had an issue with it and phoned them. The boy on the phone basically walked me through it.
The amount doing it are probably minimum and then forget to cancel the rolling subscription and pay for months without noticing.

Had to pay £10.99 to upgrade to Ultimate last week, but did only pay £75 for 3 years of gold so not complaining.

It'll be a numbers game.
They're trying to get more people on board, so they can say "hey look how many people we have on game pass - you can't afford NOT to have your game on here"
They'll happily lose money to do it, on the basis they'll be confident they'll have a dominant player base going forward.
