Xbox Scorpio

Spencer already said this box won't be running games with improved visuals at 1080p. At best it will remove the dynamic scaling found on some titles.

Purely for 4K. A missed opportunity if things stay that way.

He didn't say that lol

How can you make a console for one resolution lmao.

Indeed. He said he would let the developer decide how to use the power.
Obviously there will be some rules in place but I think we will see a lot of 1080p with better visuals

It's good that they are even carrying on with hardware side of things. I was fully in the camp that said by 2020 we'd all be using thin clients and streaming our games from datacentres - meaning devs could utilise any level of power they wanted and end users would never need to upgrade again. But I guess access to the internet still hasn't caught up enough?

If you don't own a 4K TV, "Scorpio is not going to do anything for you," Xbox head Phil Spencer has said, advising 1080p TV owners to buy an Xbox One S instead.

Talking to Eurogamer about the reasons why fans should pick up an Xbox One S now knowing that Scorpio is just over a year away, Spencer asked the interviewer: "What TV do you have?"

"A standard 1080p TV," the interviewer replied.

"Then you should buy this box [Xbox One S], because Scorpio is not going to do anything for you," Spencer said. "Scorpio is designed as a 4K console, and if you don't have a 4K TV, the benefit we've designed for, you're not going to see. Clearly, you can buy Scorpio, and if and when you decide you want to buy a 4K television to take advantage of the increased performance, obviously the console will be ready for you."

Can't wait to get more solid info on this now that we know what the PS4 Pro (Neo) is all about. The rumoured Oculus support will be a killer app.

Devs have already said making a game to run at 4K for a console is a waste, as the average console gamer is sitting back from a larger home screen.

But imagine what they could do with 1080p with every single bell and whistle maxed out, and then some.

think targeting 1080/1440 at 60fps and maxed settings is the way to go as well. 4k is a gimmick that the scorpio and s4 pro cant really pull off but its probably mostly marketing hype anyway. the scorpio could potentially for the first time in god knows how long actually do 1080 60fps on console with good graphics and would put microsfot in a great position over sony for the next 4 odd years until a ps5 comes out.

the ps4 rpo might sell initially but i don't think it will take people long to figure out its a joke machine just intended to make people rebuy the same console. it doesnt have the memory for hi quality textures to make 4k look good. even at upscaled it can only do 4k at 30 fps with graphics turned down and at 1080 it still cant hit 60fps with maxed settings. the devs for tomb raider have already said it runs between 40-60 meaning its probably more like 30-60 because of how badly it's bottle necked by the cpu. So yeah a decently power console could completely retake the market from sony for at least a few years i feel.

Yeh they did but they struggle to do more than 900p at the moment. With 4x the power they may still struggle at 4x 1080p. I wonder if they plan to do a similar checkerboard rendering approach as that would give them plenty of power for graphical effects and framerate.

Disclaimer: I own and love my OG Xbone.

I think we can discount 1440p on Scorpio. It's designed for televisions not PC monitors. I think Microsoft can do native 4K@30fps. They've (presumably) got a next gen processor, the 6TFlop GPU and an extra 4GB of RAM.

I also wonder if the Xbox 360 games will get a supersampling up to 1440p. The worst thing about playing them now is all the jaggies at 720p. It would be a cleaner 720p if they did the SSAA. Actually, I don't see how they can if the game doesn't render natively at 1440p. Scrap that.
