No they haven't - quite the opposite actually. While I get the hype - announcing something 12months+ early because of a competing console that isn't due to be announced isn't on face value a coup.
All they've done is removed the spotlight from the XO Slim...

Exactly. I think the XO Slim has it's potential sales damaged by this announcement. Now people will ignore the XO Slim and wait for the Scorpio instead. Also, they made the same mistake as Nintendo, announcing new hardware long before it releases. Expect many BS Scorpio rumours to now surface to take advantage of lack of actual news.
They should have really left the announcement till E3 2017. It's better to announce something and to be actually able to show it off and then say: "It's coming this year."
Nintendo releasing the same year as Scorpio, they really know how to launch out of date hardware compared to their competitors don't they?
To be fair, new hardware was Nintendo's idea much sooner. The other 2 are jumping on the bandwagon by the looks of things and of course Nintendo will be the one to suffer. As I said above, announcing new hardware too early is of no benefit to anyone. They should have kept their mouth shut about it all, screw the investor meetings. Just say "we're working on something big/new" instead.
To me, this looks like the Scorpio is a reply to the PSNEO, which was a reply to the NX. If the next console gen comes in this early, rushed and blurred (all 3 have mentioned their new systems aren't replacements for current hardware) it's looking to be very half-arsed for next gen at this rate.
Interesting they categorically said Scorpio will be the most powerful console on release. That's a pretty bold statement to make unless you already know the specs of the competing console, have tied up an exclusive deal for the top end console GPU/CPU for next gen or have left enough wiggle room to up spec if needed between now and then. 4K VR could be a real doozy...
Pragmatically there's no way MS can allow Xbox to not be the most powerful console for the next gen after the XB1/PS4 thing even if they have to throw billions at the project.
For me the buy once, play on PC and Xbox is interesting as I'm generally a PC gamer but enjoy X1 games with friends. Coupled with backwards compatibility even to 360 MS seems to be finally getting back into its stride for gamers, doing penance for Games for Windows
+1 Nobody knows jack about any of the consoles. For all we know, the Scorpio could releas last and be the weakest... that said they will have some time after the other 2 release to hurriedly try and fix things if it ends up being too weak.
And as you say... overall it's partially pointless having multiple levels of consoles... might as well get a PC. Consoles are the place where games are easy to access and play, PC is the place where one goes for the best performance/visuals.
This to me looks like they're trying to really blur the lines between PC and consoles. I'd much prefer consoles to stay consoles and PC to stay PC. As Richard on DF mentioned, the strength of consoles is that they have fixed hardware specs. With these supposed mid-gen 'non-replacement' consoles, there will now be an awful lot of hardware variation, thus taking that strength away from consoles as a whole.
Apologies if I appear too cynical, but why bother when I can just play these games on PC instead? Plus I'd probably end up getting one of these anyway if it's going to release ages away. Just to have an Xbox One of sorts.
